Alright, this did not happen with my set so it's really hard for me to believe it could happen. My boys are now 2 and they were easily seen at my 1st u/s at 14 wks, then another at 16 wks and then another at 24 wks. (I was bleeding heavily so had on going checks until the bleeding stopped). But another twin mom I met the other day said she had her 1st u/s at 16 wks to confirm her due date and the tech saw 1 baby. All looked good and she was given an estimated due date based on the baby's size and weight. At 28 wks another u/s was given since she began to measure noticeably ahead...which is when Baby B was discovered.

I'm highly aware that this is not the norm and really uncommon. But now after having met someone this actually happened to I thought it'd be interesting to see if anyone else had ever experienced it. Were any of your twins missed that late in the game???!!! I know after having seen so many u/s's with my two that they couldn't have been missed! LOL!

I'm now 18 wks pregnant with my 7th, the 2nd single after twins......and we know there's just 1! LOL!

yeah - I had my first u/s at 5 weeks5days - it was obvious there were 2 even that early!! and by 16 weeks - they were so big that only
the blind would have missed one!

I'm thinking maybe they just weren't looking for another baby and since her's are frats maybe they were just positioned really far apart??!!! Maybe??!! LOL! It still seems odd to me. At that stage they should be big enough that no matter their distance from each other they'd definiteily be filling up space and easily seen next to the other. Or maybe it was just a really bad tech?! [IMG] LOL!

Mine were not missed until that late. But at my first ultrasound at 8 weeks we only saw one, then when I went to the peri at 10 weeks, they did an ultrasound and we were very shocked to see 2 babies in there

I had my first sonogram done by my doctor at 6 weeks and he identified one heart beat and said everything looked good. I came in at 14 weeks because I was bleeding and the sonographer saw two babies right away. Surprise! [IMG]

We knew at 7 weeks, but at our u/s at 15 weeks, it was hard to see baby A, since baby B was on top of him. We knew there were 2 and had trouble finding them. I can see how if you weren't looking for a second, it could be missed. And who was doing the u/s? My dr.s machine isn't great- he mainly checks heartbeats and fluid with it. If it was at a hospital or specialist, I might wonder at them missing it.

Believe it or not, my boss's wife is a GP ( Dr.) and one of her co-workers ( also a Dr) has a wife who had 2 U/S, not sure at what point in the pregnancy and both missed the twins. First pregnancy, and it was the early 90's.
It wasn't until she delivered that it was discovered.
    She had B/G twins.
    And this was a Doctor's wife......crazy. p

Not quite that late, but yes, it was missed! I had a transvaginal u/s at 7 weeks for dating...one baby. At 12 weeks, another T/V u/s because we couldn't get the heartbeat on the doppler...one baby. By 14 weeks I knew something was up. And had it confirmed at my 21 [IMG] week u/s that it was twins. It does happen, although, not very often! [IMG]

She didn't say who did the u/s. She just mentioned that she went to the dr for an appt and they couldn't figure out how far along she was so they did a u/s. I assume it was at the appt in the office. When I had a u/s done at my appt with #3 they had a tech in the office that worked for them. So, I'm not sure how great the machine was or how experienced she was either. The dr said they just mainly did office u/s's to confirm due dates, check for heartbeats if needed and to see what position the baby's in. When I had u/s's with the 1st two the dr always did a quick scan to date baby and he was new at doing the u/s's himself so he liked to play around with it. So, if her's was anything like mine I guess it could be missed.....esp. if you're not looking for one.

I didn't have my first US until 20 weeks, but there were clearly 2 babies. I didn't measure big until that point either.

It can happen! I was 11w5d for my first ultrasound and there was very clearly one baby! [IMG] I started getting really big so they did another u/s at 18 weeks and there were very clearly two babies! [IMG] I have gone back and looked at the first u/s video a million times and there is definitely only one baby on there!

Since we have known there are two, they have had about a 30% size discordance (it's a lot less now) so they think one baby was possibly just "hiding" behind the other.

    So yeah, it happens!

Some people are made with sound absorbing tissue. Not always big ladies either, but this can make it hard to see much of anything at 18wks. Unfortunatly anyone 300+lbs are hard to image with any type of modality, u/s, x-ray, ct, etc. The person's body mass plays a big part. No excuse, just pitfalls in imaging.

I had my first u/s at 6 weeks and there were very obviously TWO babies in there. But I have read stories where one twin could be hiding behind the other. My one friend teases me all the time that I have a triplet hiding behind my twins, lol. But so far, only two babies for us! [IMG]

In one brisbane hospital (major Australian city) up to 48% of ultrasound results in false-positive. Which means a great proportion of these women are told that their baby has a disability and they should abort. So all these murdered human beings for nothing. I know how unreliable and unsafe even the most advanced hospital equipement can be and have heard story after story of missed multiples even a trip. missed all the way through so it can definately happen (machinery and human beings are not infallible.)

U/S at about 15weeks showed just one perfectly formed baby.
U/S at 22 weeks showed 2 perfectly formed babies. [IMG]

But my missed twin was the result of incompetance. The first U/s was in Bulgaria at the "top" maternity hospital in the capital. We taped it. The 2nd was in the US while on vacation. The doctor watched the video of the first & saw the twin within 30 seconds. Technology is only as good as the human using it.

My daughter found out she was having twins at her 18 week ultrasound, but it was her first ultrasound. I was surprised that her doctor did not do an ultrasound earlier and also that there were not two heartbeats heard before 18 weeks.

I saw her the day before her ultrasound and teased her that I thought she was having two (okay I didn't really think that, I was just giving her a hard time!) so when she called to tell me that she was having twins, I didn't believe her at all, I thought she was just teasing back. It wasn't until I actually saw the U/S pictures that I realized she wasn't kidding! [IMG] She still says I "jinxed" her by mentioning twins ... but that not the initial shock is over she admits it was a GOOD JINX!
