I was just wondering what other people thought. I just got it last week - hoping to avoid any oops! I'm pregnant again situations for a few years. Insertion was fine, I feel fine except one little, well actually, BIG thing. Sex- its different suddenly - not nearly as good as a week ago before Mirena insertion. And the other thing, my DH can feel the strings poking him. My friend had a similar problem. I just dont know how I feel about giving up good sex for 2 years. I mean is part of the birth control - decreasing your desire for sex? What do you think?

I've had mine for about 2 months and my only complaint is the daily brown spotting I'm having. I knew to expect that, but still it's a pain. It should not affect your sex drive in any way as the progesterone acts only on your uterus and is not absorbed into your bloodstream. Also, if the strings are poking your husband, go see your doctor and she can trim the strings.

I felt a little "off" for the first week or two. For me, I was wondering if it was the adjustment in hormones since I came off of BCP to get the Mirena.

Your doctor can trim the strings so dh won't feel them.

I have had the mirena for about 6 months now, and I have had no sexual side effects whatsoever. I would give it a bit for your body to adjust to it, and if its still a problem, I would talk to your Dr about it.

I have had mine for a while and I went for my annual and told her that I felt a little different and she said she would give me some cream to help with the hormones down there. Oh and I agree with pp, you can get the strings trimmed. Make sure to check for your IUC once a month to make sure it is still in place

I have the IUD but not the Mirena. I have the copper IUD. Definetly if the strings can be felt, go get checked! FYI- I love the Copper IUD except that my periods are insanely heavy but other then that...no problems. I like that there are no hormones going into my body.

I don't have any answer but I'm interested because I'm supposed to get it too. Somehow I haven't found the time to do it. I'm not sure it's not an unconscious way for me to avoid it. In fact, I have a few issues with it:
    - the insertion: does it hurt?
    - can it move and not be in a good position (see pp)?
    - and now the problems you're reporting :(

I don't want to get pregnant again (at least right now) but for some reason I feel like I can't make up my mind and get it done.

I've had mine for almost a year and my husband can not feel the strings. My OB trimmed them for me and told me if they needed to be shorter she could trim it again. Definitely ask your doctor about that. It took a couple of months for my periods and myself to get regulated. I am completely satisfied with mine now that I've had it for this long.

Just to answer your questions marylane: Yes, it is uncomfortable having it inserted and I cramped and bled off and on for a couple of weeks. However, since about month 3 I have had at most a two day period and only need liners for that with no cramping at all--some months I only spot for a day and that's it. I don't know about if it can be moved, but I can't tell I have it at all, it isn't like a tampon where you know something is in you. The strings start out long and the OB always has to trim them, however, it may take a day or so to figure out if the strings need to be shorter. Be sure, however, to make sure your insurance covers it, mine didn't and it was about $700. However, I had flex money to cover.

Thanks! my OB/gyn told me that my insurance does cover it. One of the reasons I am a little bit anxious is that she's great as a doctor for everything else but examinations. Each time it hurt me more than with the other doctors that I saw a few times in L&D

uncomfortable while they are doing it - but nothing compared to pushing out two babies!

    - can it move and not be in a good position (see pp)?
apparently it can, this is why I am having a follow up 1 month post insertion

yeah i was the same way then my milk supply plummeted and I thought I might be pregnant again and I totally freaked out and made the call. i am going to try to get the strings trimmed and hope the sex iss ue will just be temporary, but i dint have too much hope because i had the same problem when i was pregnant. :(

if you dont mind getting pregnant again (by accident) - dont get it, for me it wouldnt be a good thing but we would have managed. i definately would have had to quit my job and I have gone through far too maany years of schooling to even think about that. so, baby 3 needs to wait intil the girls are at leat 2 and daycare costs decrease. now if we have twins again that will be a different story!
