Today at my 27 week ultrasound the Dr. discovered that my cervix is only 0.8 cm long!!! WoW this is a mini cervix. My Baby A's head is sitting right on top of the cervix and sometimes causes it to open completely. My Dr. has now put me on COMPLETE bed rest (shower once a day and I can sit up to eat meals, the rest of the time lying on my sides)and taking the Procardia every 4 hours. I even have to wake up in the middle of the night to take it. I'm really surprised that I was even allowed to come home. Thankfully, since I have an at home uterine monitor they were comfortable letting me come home. I will now be seeing my MFM Dr. once a week to check my cervical length and to check the babies' fluids (I did have early stage TTTS that has seemed to correct itself).

The babies seem to be doing great though. Baby A is 2lb 4oz and Baby B is 2lb 9oz! Getting big, but in the scheme of things still so small...much to small to join the world! The fluid levels were not extremely off balance today. One had 2.8 and the other had 3.0. These seem low compared to the past, but the babies are so intertwined now that it is really difficult to see what is where. For example Baby A's foot was right in Baby B's face and their legs were even intertwined. Baby A is head down and on my left side whereas Baby B is transverse on the right with his head way up high in the middle of my belly with his legs wrapping down, basically it looks like a tight *** mess in there!

    BIG HUGS!!!

I think that a short cervix is somewhat normal with twins. I started shortening at 25 weeks was on indocin and nephidipine every 4hours till I reached 34 weeks. Also on strick bedrest. I also had to go to weekly ultrasounds and echo cardiograms. I have been admitted to the hospital 3 times and lost count how many times I have been to the triage center. Once I was sent by ambulance. Now I am 35 weeks and I am positive these babies are never coming out. I am 5 cm dilated and 100% effaced and still home but finally off bed rest. Which doesn't say much because I am huge and so uncomfortable. Hang in there you are not alone!!!

    Kristy, that is short!!

Glad the babies are doing so well. Hopefully the bedrest will get that little off your cervix and let it get longer!

Kristy, I'm sorry you are now on bedrest. I would definitely not sit up long for meals, and lay down as much as possible. Did you get the steroid shots? If not, I would ask your OB about them. Hang in there, I know bedrest is tough, BTDT.

out of curiosity, what was your cervix measuring previously? was it already beginning to shorten or was this totally sudden???

I was put on bedrest at 17 weeks for a short cervix (a little over 2cm). It got down to .7 by around 26 weeks. I was already going to MFM every week to check the cervix and the babies and I was also going to my regular OB every week (so 2 visits/week for most of pregnancy). MFM told me every time "If I had to guess, I won't be seeing you next week". Well, my "mini cervix" held tight somehow. I ended up making to almost 32 weeks and it wasn't even the cervix that made me deliver - it was pre-e. So, just wanted you to know that although that is very short, it doesn't guarantee that you will not be able to hold the babies in. Definitely be careful, because I'm sure you know, every extra day they are inside of you really does help!

    Good luck!

It was fairly short, but not crazy short like now. 2 weeks ago it was 2.0

Just wondering, when you were on bed rest did you always lie down or did you sit up at times? Also, did you how did you prop your bottom up, if you did? When I put a pillow under my butt it just totally throws my back out of whack and kills me!

I'm sorry to hear you are on bedrest, but don't stress too much. I was in a very similiar situation. My cervix was about the same as yours at 26 weeks. I made it with bedrest and meds to 37 weeks and 5 days. Ask your doctor about 17 methyl progesterone. In addition to the progesterone shots weekly, I took procardia and terbutaline. I also did the home monitor which gave me great piece of mind, but after 34 weeks was becoming a pain, so we discontinued it.
I took by bedrest seriously. I ate in bed, did not sit at the table and spent majority of my time on my left side and only showered every three dyas, you don't really get that dirty lying around in bed, lol. Back pain from lying in bed was my biggest problem and DH was great with the massages.
    Best wishes to you.

Take care of you and babies. They just need some more cook time in the oven. Bedrest stinks, but we can do it.

Yikes. Way short. From 26-28 weeks mine went from 5-2.5 and after that I basically only got up to use the bathroom. I even tried to eat laying down I was so freaked out. My cervix did lengthen though with bedrest. Please lay as flat as you can and keep that pressure off of your cervix.

I have a chaise lounge that I spent almost 4 months on! I spent most of the time lying down, but did sit up a good bit. I was so sore from being on my sides so much, I had to sit up some. I still had my feet up and was somewhat inclined with a pillow behind me. I never propped my bottom up. I just flipped back and forth on each side with a pillow between my knees. I was probably not as strict with the bedrest as I should have been - so probably not the best to give advice on that. But I made it much further than any Dr ever thought I would and my babies are very healthy and beautiful!!

    Hi there,
I was pregnant with b/g twins, and they are now 7 months old. At 24 weeks, I had a MFM appt. and they found my cervix had dropped to 6 mm (previously about 2.5 cm). I was hospitalized for a week or so to monitor my contractions. It was too late for a cerclage (my girl's sac was directly on my cervix). I took procardia every 4 hours, plus the p-17 shots every week. I was released home on strict BR. I took a shower every other day. I kept my hips slightly elevated above my heart as much as I could tolerate. I stayed on the couch except to use the restroom or grab something fast from the refrigerator. I was on BR until I delivered (thankfully) at 36 weeks. Sometime around 32 weeks I started to loosen up my restrictions a little bit. I started sitting up a bit more, but not much. By 35 weeks I was off of BR, but I was so big I could hardly move. My BR lasted for 3 months, but I'm grateful it worked. Be careful and take care of yourself. Every day inside is a good thing. Glad to hear both babies are doing well. take care, Beth
