    Hi girls!
The babies are starting to outgrow their sensitivity to milk. They haven't had hives in at least 3 wks. We had them allergy tested on Friday and to our amazment they reacted to NOTHING!!! Prayer works! :D
So here's my question. Since the allergist said to stay away from milk, we are considering using the last cans of enfacare we were given when they were born. I'll still nurse, but we would supplement only when needed. Like if we are out and not in a convienent place. Does the higher calorie formula have enough in it to be worthwhile for us to try? We don't want to waste their hunger. We need to get them gaining and growing again. I don't have an appt w/ the nutritionist until next week.

I think that it would be fine to be honest. I had mine on regular formula until 14 months because i had so much. The pedi told me that this was fine. Mine are growing just fine so i say go with it. We were on enfacare for 4 months too... :) Good luck!

Cody needs soy so we bought some of the ready to go bottles of isomil for our trip so it didn't have to be refrigerated. I don't think a little formula is too bad after a year. Some kids are on it alot longer.

I was thinking that it couldn't do any harm. Thanks girls!

    Nini,

Not sure if you're still looking at this... but both our pedi and the EI feeding specialist we worked with told me that formula is actually better than milk, but that people are encouraged to switch to milk because it's less expensive. The formula companies had a big enough fight 30 years ago to convince breastfeeding mothers to switch to formula that they decided not to market formula to anyone over a year. That was a fight they figured they couldn't win given the low cost of milk. The pedi told me that if toddlers got 16 - 20 ounces of formula rather than milk until they were about 18 months, there would be less vitamin deficiency in toddlers. Interesting, huh?

Ditto to the previous post. My pedi recommended we go to a next-step formula as the gold standard, but he also said that whole cow milk plus a vitamin is ok as well. He said that the next-step formulas as better suited for a toddler's nutritional needs, but that using regular formula was ok too. He did say that we should cut down to 16-20 oz of formula or milk a day though so that they get most of their nutrition from solid food.

I don't see what it can hurt to use the formula you have.

If you're still nursing, they're getting lots of good age-appropriate nutrients from that already. I'd say that a little of almost anything would be perfectly fine, and I know a pediatrician who continued to use formula for her 13-month-old because of milk/soy/egg allergies.
