Milk supply after a C-Section

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here is my question.

I had a C-Section with the twins and it took forever for my milk to come in so I could nurse. I have been told that this is normal after C-Sections and that they can cause your milk to come in later than a regular delivery. I pumped for days, every 3 hours, even in the middle of the night, and nothing. The most I ever got the whole time I nursed, was 3 ounces total from both sides. I used the pump I rented from the hospital.

So my question, how long after your C-Section, did your milk supply come in and when were you producing enough to safisfy the baby?

I am so worried that this will happen again with this C-Section (although it is a ways off). I want so badly to be able to nurse this baby, longer and better than the twins. Are some people just not able to nurse?

I don't remember exactly when my milk came in, but it started while I was still at the hospital - so must have been within the first four days. I was getting that sort of transitional milk - thick and yellow, but more than just colostrum. By 1wk pp my milk was definitely in.

Don't judge your milk supply by pumping - the pump never gets out as much as a baby could, and some women just don't pump well. How much you pump is no indication of how much milk you have. I've been able to nurse and satisfy a hungry baby AFTER pumping until nothing more would come out.

Chances are, you'll be just fine with your new baby! All they need for the first few days is colostrum anyway. A newborn's stomach is about the size of a marble, they don't need much, and colostrum is perfect for them. Just take the baby to the breast as soon as possible after the section, room in at the hospital and nurse. That's the best way to get your milk to come in. It is usually not necessary for the nurses to supplement with formula - your body can take perfect care of your baby. :)

Hope the rest of your pregnancy is smooth sailing!

Mine came in on the fifth day post op. I had them on a Thursday night and my milk came in on Tuesday morning. I had to use a pump to get it started because the babies didn't have a strong enough latch to get it going. Once it came in I never had a whole lot of a problem keeping up. The day it came in I had enough to feed the babies. They get a lot more out than the pump ever can!

I got Lilly to the breast the first time 3 hours post op, from that point on she was at it every 2 hours at least. Milk came in day 5 in the car on the way home. You just have to stimulate those breasts when they did not get the natural hormones from labor and delivery to do so.
Supplements to baby during this time are not benefical to the nursing relationship!

Day three and by day four I was engorged. I pumped like crazy for the first week and then continued for the rest of that month.

Mine wasn't until about day 5 - c-section was on friday and I think my milk was really coming in on wednesday maybe. But even after that it took a week or more before I had enough supply to not have to supplement with formula.

Mine came in on day 5. I had a c-section and the kids were never supplimented. I did pump in the hospital some.. not a lot. Babies have such small stomachs initially that they don't need much and the colostrum that you have should be enough!

MIne came in on day 4 after a c-section. The nurses pushed me to supplement in the hospital. Now I am mad but at the time I didn't know how to stop them. So decide if you want that or not ahead of time and make sure the pedi will let you do that when he/she checks on the baby in the hospital.

I had a c-section with my girls and my milk came in 3 days after while I was still in the hospital. I had more than enough when it came to milk supply didn't have to supplement at all. I pumped once but it was so they could feed the girls so I could get some sleep. It seems like with twins it might come in faster, just because the demand is higher with two nursing. That was my experience as a first time mom. Best of luck to you:)

I didn't even get colostrum until about day 3, and no real milk until day 6. It was really hard. By the time my milk came in, we were already giving a lot of formula, and BF never really worked out. I did have one or two weeks (when they were about 2-3 weeks old) when they were primarily BF, but they also had latch problems, and my supply never took off.

But, I don't think you should let a bad experience with twins discourage you. BF one baby has got to be a lot easier! And you'll have a head start because you already know the basics (even though every baby is different). Also, you have the previous experience to guide you in terms of what you tell the nurses (about giving formula or not).

FWIW, my SIL just had twins by c-section after going into labor naturally (she had a c-section because she wasn't progressing). She was getting colostrum the very next day and her milk came in on day 3 or 4. As far as I know, BF is going fine for her.

mine came in on day 4, same day i went home from the hospital. i felt awful at first, because 1 of my girls had low blood sugar (4lb12oz) and they both had to be supplemented because they were losing too much weight. i really wanted to bf and did NOT want to give bottles, but had no choice. after 1 week, we were able to stop supplementing as they were gaining well on just my milk. you CAN bf twins!

My came in just as fast as with my VBAC births. Which VERY odd was super quick 1 1/2 days! Hopefully this time you can skip the pump and your baby will help it come in much faster than the pump.

I think it came in between day 3 & 4. I didn't pump and I didn't suddenly feel full so I don't know exactly when but their poop changed over on day 4 and they started gaining. I leaked colostrum long before their birth so I knew they were getting something from the beginning.
