Milk Allergy?

    Elias started out as a gassy baby. I thought we were heading to full-blown colic when a friend recommended that we switch to a hydrolyzed formula. This worked wonders for him and we didn't have the problem again. When we started with solids I had to make the decision whether to give them dairy or not (I'm a vegan). After much research (and after their refusal of most beans) I decided that I was going to give them dairy. They have had yogourt and cheese and its been fine. They've just turned one and I've been transitioning them to whole milk. Elias has been getting gassy again. I'm not sure if that means he is actually lactose intolerant or whether his body will get used to it (it's been 5 days). Do you think I should put him back on just formula for a while and try again later? What about goat's milk? The other thing is that I'm dreading the thought of taking him off all milk. It's a fairly big part of his diet and is a good part of his protein source. Feeding him meat is not an option for me. Any ideas on how I should proceed?

    How long have you been giving him yogurt? We had a milk allergy and we did not dairy or soy for just over a year and then we had to do a 10 day yogurt challenge to see if he would react to it. He did fine and then we introduced whole milk. He had a few softish stools for a day or two with the switch but seemed fine.

    I dont know anything about goats milk but I know of a few that have used rice milk without issue. What did your Ped say at your 12 months wbv about the milk allergy and transfering to whole milk?

    Unfortunately we haven't had our 12 month yet - I didn't want to have it and them get their shots before their birthday party then my doctor was out of town. We have it next Friday. Rice milk (and soy for that matter) doesn't have the fat content that they need. I've given him yogourt for about 3 months now. He seems fine with it.

    Could you try soy and then add in the extra fat by using olive oil or other food that contain the fat needed? My oldest son drank soy for 6 yrs and we never needed to add the extra fat. Now the twins have a full blown sensitivity to milk and soy. They get hives. We are on to try rice now. I'm not sure gas only is a indication of a milk intolerance, but maybe it is. Hope you figure it out.

    I have friends who used goat milk instead of cows and really loved it. It has all of the benefits of cow's milk but is easier to digest.

    My girls both had a milk protein intolerance for the first 10 months or so but have successfully transitioned to cow's milk. We did deal with gassiness and a bit of fussiness during the first two weeks but everything smoothed out soon after. I'd say give it another week with the cow's milk for your son and then if it doesn't work try goat milk.

    We're not doing dairy at all due to protein allergy/sensitivity/intolerance and I'm also worried about them getting enough fat. They drink soy milk when they're not nursing, and I try to add as much avocado, egg, sunflower seed butter and tahini to their food as I can get away with. And canola oil and good quality margarine (Earth Balance) go on/in most every meal. I still worry, but there are lots of other sources of good fats out there besides butterfat...not that I have ANYTHING against butter!
