I am 15 weeks pg and still on Metformin (2K extended release). My RE put me on it almost 2 years ago and after I got pg said to stay on it (I'm prediabetic and test my blood every other day) for the duration and that it was safe for the babies. After I was released to my OB, she has deferred to my RE. Yesterday I went to my regular endo (sugar doc) and said all my numbers were great and she wished all her prediabetic patients were as good as me :) That's fine, but she asked if I was still on the Met and I told her "yes" and she wanted to make sure my OB knew about it since she has never had a pg patient on oral meds...usually just insulin. So, now I'm kind of freaked out. I'm going to talk to my OB on the 5th when I see her next, but I wanted to see if ANYONE else was on Metformin up until (or after) they delivered.

    TIA!

PS. I wasn't sure if this was the right board to post this one, so if anyone thinks there is a better board, let me know.

I was on metformin before the twins, but my OB had me stop at 13 weeks.

I did not go back on, hated the side effects, now I'm just on the BCP. I do know people who have stayed on it their entire pregnancy though, from another message board I used to be on.

I was on Glumetza- a new form of glucophage- for 13 weeks of this pregnancy. I was taken off due to we were using more for progesterone issues, and PCOS issues- but I do know that it is safe during pregnancy! If it was safe- they would not have you take it during the first trimester :p

I have had 3 docs with three different opinions. one preferred me to stop metformin when i got my bfp (RE). one wanted me to stay on it through the first trimester (Peri) and my ob/gyn said she would have preferred I stay on it my entire pregnancy, but she didn't see me during my pregnancy. Different docs have different protocols, so I would talk to your OB about your worries, but I think it's fine.

I was on Metformin 2000mg for almost 2 years...Once I got pregnant-the RE took me off it at 8 weeks when she released me to ob. Ob never said anything about it-and my sugar levels were fine when I did the GDT(if that makes a difference) and I'm 35 wks pregnant...

I'm wondering if I go back on it after the boys are born?!?! Will it help me lose weight again?!!??!

Were all you ladies prediabetic too or did your RE's just have you on it to TTC?

I have PCOS. I was 1500mg of ER before I got pg with my RE. Went to 2000mg after I got pg. Both my RE and OB/midwives said to stay on it throughout and I did. I really think it helped control my weight gain and prevented GD.

    I am still on it.
