My girls are 7 1/2 months and seem to be interested in finger type foods (love to watch Daddy eat pretzels!) at what age is it appropriate to do teething cookies and/or mesh feeders? A lot of the baby cookies have wheat in them ... aren't you supposed to wait a year? Just wondering if that is more if a "guideline" than a hard and fast =)

    TIA!

    Traci,

We started with teething biscuits at about seven months and mesh feeders at nine months. Many people start mesh feeders a lot earlier than we did... I just hadn't found one I liked. We don't have any food allergies in our family so I wasn't worried about the small amount of wheat in the biscuits (my girls get one biscuit every few days). If your girls are interested in finger foods you could try Puffs or Cheerios or even small pieces of fruits or vegetables.

We've been on the teething biscuits since they were 7 months old. No issues here. We also have the mesh feeders and we literally don't go out to eat without them. We put everything in there-tortillas, focaccia bread, chicken breast, fruit, you name it. It really keeps them occupied and it's the only thing resembling food that one of my boys will put near his mouth.

We have been using the mesh feeders for a month now. Not all the time but often. I also give mine graham crackers. They disolve easily so I don't worry about them choking. They love them. Some days that is the only solid food my DD will eat. They also like Cheerios but can't put them into their mouth yet. THey will eat any type of bread that you can put a little piece in their mouths. THey have eaten a lot of fruit pieces with me putting it in their mouth. I can't wait until they get the pincer grasp so they can do it them selves. The only thing they can do now are the crackers and mesh feeders. I guess I should use them more often

I am glad you asked this, because I just got teething biscuits and saw that they have wheat in them and wasn't sure if I could/should give them to the beebs.

Can someone explain the mesh feeder to me? I don't know that I understand their purpose. Are they new? I don't recall seeing or hearing about them when my 5 y/o was a baby.

    TIA,
    Christy

    Mesh Feeders

There is a link to them. You put solid foods in them and the babies can suck on them without risk of choking on anything.

Thanks to all who answered ... it seems like we must be at a good age to start!

I tried the teething biscuit last night (had one knawing on the biscuit in the highchair while I fed the other ... as opposed to putting her in front of Noggin' like I usually do) and it worked pretty well! They didn't even eat half of it together so I guess it may be rather expensive to do for every meal ... but we'll see.

I tried the mesh feeder this morning and they seemed to dig it. I put a few chunks of banana in there and while I almost gagged when I cleaned it out the girls seemed to like it ;)

    Thanks again all!
