I was just wondering for those of you who have been experiencing differences in your babies sizes, at what point did the difference start becoming significant? Doctor's say that there is usually some difference but how far along were you when they noticed it was going to be a problem? Were your babies identical or fraternal?

from the beginning my girls were 3 days off in size - then at 30 weeks we got a shock when they were 2 weeks off!! ( a whole pound!)
My doctor put me on bedrest and it worked! I will have my c-section tomorrow and my babies are measuring 6pounds 11oz and 7 pounds 3oz!!

i am 33 weeks...there has been a slight variation in their weights the entire pregnancy. the little boy consistently measures a bit larger, while my girl is smaller. last u/s was a week ago, and our little boy was 4 lbs 4 oz, and the girl was 3 lbs 12 oz. hoping to make it a few more weeks...but with nonstop contractions and at least 1 trip to L&D a week, these two have a mind of their own as to when they want to make their grand appearance.

Mine were measuring significantly different from the start but the start for us was 19 weeks. Prior to that we did not know we were having multiples and hadn't had an u/s. K&K are fraternal and the difference was never a problem. They were 1 pound 4 ounces discordant at birth but again, it was not considered a problem. Their estimated weights were watching carefully to make sure they were both growing but the difference never posed any issues.

My situation was a lot like Diane's - found out about the twins at 19-20 weeks and there was a discordance with them at at that time. So not sure when it started. The discordance has grown, but both are growing, just on their own growth curve. Last u/s at 31-32 weeks had one @ 4#1oz and the other at 2#9oz. And they are most likely fraternal (di/di). But remember - these u/s growth scans later in the pregnancy can be off by as much as a pound, so who knows!

Unless the doctor is concerned, I wouldn't be.

My boys showed quite different at each u/s.

When born, they were 1 pound 12 ounces different and one was 6cm longer than the other. No concerns as they are fraternal.

My fraternal twins started measaured differently in 'weeks' right from the start. It did not become cause for concern until 24 weeks when their growth scans showed a discord of more than 30% and the littler one was in the 10th percentile. My dr. has since told me to reduce activity and I need to go in for weekly scans to be sure the little guy is holding his own. I will deliver between 30-34 weeks as long as everything stays status quo.

Your boys are identical and sharing a placenta, right? It's really difficult to compare a monochorionic twin pregnancy with a dichorionic one...as far as growth issues are concerned. With Dichorionic, if they are fraternal, it's much more common to have different weights, because they are completely different genetically and can grow at different rates. There can still be issues of IUGR, etc. though. With Mono twins, growth issues usually result from an unequal share of one placenta. Things can still be "okay" though as long as the weight difference doesn't become too much. I think I mentioned in another post that the fluid levels in a mono twin pregnancy are the more important thing.

I didn't have the best monitoring with my last identical pregnancy. At 20 weeks there was almost a 20% disconcordance and TTTS was involved, although we didn't know that at the time. At birth my girls were both small for their gestation. One was 10.37 oz. and the other was just over 14 oz. Even though it was only a few ounces, the difference in their weights was very obvious as we looked at them.

Try not to worry. Like another poster said, if the doctor isn't concerned, you most likely don't need to be either (as long as he/she knows what they're looking for). When is your next ultrasound? Soon, right? Hope things are looking good for your boys. [IMG]
