Measuring behind

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by 2010Babydreamz, May 17, 2011.

I'm 32 wks and 2 days pregnant with Fraternal twin boys. One baby is measuring at 35 weeks and weights a little over 5.1 lbs and the other one measures at 31 weeks and weights 3.11 lbs. Is it normal for it to be that big of a difference? One has always been a little bigger but not that much. The Dr. didn't seem worried about it. But I can't help but be!

U/S measurements can be off by about a lb, which could be why your doctor isnt overly concerned. If it is really worrying you, maybe call your ob and see what he has to say.

i agree with Slipper. If the doctor didn't seem worried but you have questions about it then call and ask. They are there to help and reassure you. Good Luck and let us know what they say

Ditto on the ultrasound measurements being off. They are really inaccurate. My guess is they will follow it, see if the trend continues.

To me, the fact that one baby is measuring so much ahead is a red flag. Are you with a high risk doctor at all? I'm aware that ultrasounds can be off, but this is a big difference and rather unusual. Is there one placenta or two?

You know, I agree with Twinsitis on this one. Is it a peri?

I just did the math on the littler baby. If he weighs 3 lbs now at 32 weeks and gains .5 a pound a week he should be about 8 pounds at 40 weeks. This does not account for the extra days you are or the 11 ozs he is bigger currently.

Lastly, I agree with all pps- remember up to a pound different. Sometimes their positioning makes it tough- you could call and ask about B's positioning specifically to see whether it was harder to get a read on him.

/slaps forehead/, I just read that you wrote it's fraternal.

  7. Thanks for the responses!

My doctor is not a high risk pg doctor. However I do trust his judgments. I have an appt. For next Wednesday I plan to ask lots of questions. Yesterday when I had my ultrasound it hadn't all soaked in so I didn't ask questions. The smaller baby has always measured behind the other one but not this much behind.
I'm so scared something will happen to them.

From 30 weeks on, my frats always had a big difference. In fact at 37 weeks they were almost 2 pounds difference. A week later when they were born, they were only 1/2 pound different. With twins, it is so hard to get good accurate measurements near the end.

  9. I hope that's the case!

I wouldn't worry too much over the next week. Monitor the babies' movement and, if everything feels good, you can probably get to Wed with no problems. If anything changes you should go back in though. I think everybody is probably right about the positioning making the measurements difficult an inaccurate. Be sure to ask specifically about that. The only concern I have is the possibility of IUGR which can sometimes necessitate giving birth sooner. If you have any doubts or concerns, call the doctor back and ask for clarification.

    Good luck!

Honestly, if I were in your position I'd go to a high risk doctor. If he's not high risk, there's only so much that he knows. There's no way I'd stay with such a doctor with this new issue, even if it might turn out to be nothing. At such a time, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

My aunt gave birth to twins suffering from TTTS and they had no idea that this issue even exists. Luckily, they did well in the end, but she said looking back, she can't believe she stuck with that doctor when there were so many questions and issues.

I would ask to be referred to a high risk DR. I am not suggesting there is an issue but seeing one will ease your heart and mind.

My twins measured fairly close to what yours are. My baby A did not show any growth from from 32 weeks. I had to see a specialist in Boston and get regular level 3 US. During those we found that my daughters fluid was diminishing. Thankfully I was able to get the shot to help lung development. I delivered in my 36th week. My baby A weighed 3.12 ... My baby B weighed 5.3

Both are fine today. My smaller one did have asthma when she was younger and is still smaller than most of her classmates. Many people said it was good I was not smoking because that contributes to smaller babies. But, both are healthy.

Just to be on the safe side i would get a referral for a level 3 US

This. There is no substitute for a high risk OB. Let's hope it is nothing, but better safe than sorry.
