Hi, I just had my second mid-wife appt. on Monday at which time I was 15 weeks 2 days with my first baby. When my mid-wife went to measure me she measured me at 18 weeks. I was shocked! I did not expect to be that big. I asked her why I would be that big and she said there could be two. So, she took out the doppler and really searched for the baby. She found a baby right away, but kept searching for more. My husband told me she looked really confused the whole time while searching. At one point she found a baby and said, "I think that is the same baby as before but I just don't know." She eventually stopped looking and told me we will know for sure at our ultrasound which isn't until Jan. 3rd. She said she has only found twins 3 times on the doppler because they are hard to find as they often have the same heartbeat rate or one is hidden. So, my question to all you ladies is, would it be possible that I am pregnant with twins? I did not ever get a beta done so I don't know my numbers. I have been very sick though, and still am throwing up now. I also am positive on my ovulation date as I was charting so I know that I am right on target with my weeks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well first off, congratulations on your pregnancy! Your midwife is correct in that the doppler is not the most accurate way of determining twins. It is so unreliable in fact, that my OB never once used it. I always was given a quick U/S to check heartbeats.

So unfortunately, you will have a bit of a wait before you can tell for sure. Good luck and I hope that you get the news that you are hoping for.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with the ultrasound! January 3 seems like such a long time to wait to find out, but with the holidays coming up, it will hopefully fly by for you!

Thank you ladies. My patience is definitely going to be tested these next few weeks.[IMG] It is the holidays though, so it will help things fly along. We would absolutely be thrilled to have twins! Both my hubsband and I have always wanted them. We will wait and see. Did you ladies measure ahead early on before you even knew you had twins?

    CONGRATULATIONS!!! and [IMG]
My doctor has never measured me - I am 33weeks pregnant with twins
and they have never used the doppler either- they always do a quick ultrasound to check heartbeats! I found out at 6weeks that I was having twins. I hope you get your wish!! GOOD LUCK!!

my situation was similar, at my 3rd midwife appt I was measuring ahead 4 weeks. ( I was 16 weeks measuring 20) and the first thing she asked me knowing that it was my first pregnancy were if there was twins on my side of the family. ( my grandma had 2 sets & a set of triplets). So yes there were!! and we knew driving home what was going on, I was also on declectin for throwing up throughout the entire pregnancy- it got slightly better near the end but if I stopped taking them it started back up again.
As far as the doppler is concerned she could only get 1 baby also, and it wasn't until I was farther along that the obgyn could get their hb that way, and they always were different.
I didn't have my beta done either so I'm not much help there, but my sickness started right at 6 weeks so it was probably on the higher side.
for the record, I just had my 3rd baby 5 weeks ago, and that pregnancy was almost the same as my first...sickness, the way I carried, and measuring ahead- 9 weeks ahead at my last appt and he weighed almost a pound heavier than the 2 girls together, and he was also 2 weeks early. So you never know.
    Congrats & good luck, p

Pam-So when did you finally find out it was twins. I am now really curious and wonder if I can hold out until the ultrasound on Jan. 3rd.

Anyone with more experiences either way?

    Thanks.

Not sure if this helps or not, but here's our situation:

This is our first pregnancy. We found out for sure with a clinical urine test that we were pregnant at 5 weeks. However, we were about to move back to our home town in a month or so, so we figured we'd wait to get started with our prenatal care til we got back to town. So, at 13 weeks DH and I went in for our first prenatal visit. The nurse first did a doppler and had a hard time finding a solid heartbeat. She said 'you must have a fast swimmer in there cause I can't really nail it down'. Anyway, she found a heartbeat and then the doc came in and talked for a bit, then looked at my tummy and said, 'Well, you sure do have a uterus there!' Not sure if he suspected at that point or not. Then, while proceeding with the u/s, he nonchalantly showed us the membrane that separated our twin A from twin B and how shocked were we! We had no clue! I WAS really exhausted during that first trimester and was pretty sick, not overly sick I don't think, but definately ill. Anyway, we found out at 13 weeks. Our doc has never done any measurements (like 'you're measuring such and such weeks ahead) so I'm not sure how that works.

Sorry you have to wait so long to find out for sure but good luck to you and what ever the outcome...happy pregnancy!

Mrs.Bears-Yeah, thanks![IMG] At this point I can't imagine either. However, DH keeps telling me it will go fast with the holidays.

Sitkamom-See I have a tilted uterus so at my first appt. which wasn't until 11 weeks my mid-wife didn't say anything. It wasn't until this last appt. that she did. She measured me from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus. That is what measured me at 18 weeks when I am only 15 with my first baby! She did tell me that I didn't look 18 weeks pregnant and I am wondering if that is not because my uterus is still tilted backward? I dont' know though. Thanks.

The twins were our first babies and I started measuring large at my 16 week appt. It was just a little bit though and the midwife only mentioned it in passing. We had already heard the heartbeat of our (supposed) one baby by that time. We had our u/s at 19 weeks and that's when we found out it was twins.

I was never sick during the first trimester and the midwives never noticed anything unusual in my blood tests. Some people just measure large but it's certainly possible that you could be pregnant with twins. Congratulations on your pregnancy! [IMG]

I've been measuring ahead since about 11 weeks, but we already knew it was twins then. My doc said one of the reasons i was so sick (morning, noon and night sickness!) is that the hormonal load was so high!

Is there any way you can get your u/s BEFORE Jan 3? I imagine the waiting is intense! Either way, congrats on your pregnancy!

Ali-We have heard the heartbeat twice so far. Once at our first appt at 11 weeks, and then at the 15 week appt.

Jordari-My insurance only pays for one ultrasound and we would like to wait until 20 weeks for sure to do the one ultrasound and don't really want to spend the money on another one. So, we are going to wait. However, I think I am going to need to bump up the ultrasound time since I just realized today that January 3rd is not going to work. I think we will push for end of December now. Hopefully that will help with just a little less waiting time![IMG] Morning sickness (all day and night) has been bad for me but seems to finally be lessening up these last three days or so. When did it stop for you?

We found out it was twins @ 18 weeks, we had to wait 2 weeks to get the u/s appt, the longest 2 weeks of my life!! I would try to bump that appt up asap, twins would be a great x-mas present....cheers, pam

I found out it was twins at my first U/S at 12 weeks. The midwife only used the doppler once as she said you really need 2 people to do it for twins. I got big quick and buttons started to pop of trousers lol. My friend who was having one baby looked bigger than me! Her ds weighed in a 7 lb 15 oz. The doctor said she had a lot of fluid around the baby and she is small so it made her look so huge. After using the doppler one time her midwife thought she was having triplets as she said she could hear 3 heartbeats! She also had an awful pregnancy (paralised and constantly sick) so every one reconed she should have had the twins as mine was near perfect. So i think it just depends on your body as every one is different. But let us know how the U/S goes. Lol i am no help x

If you all think that it took 4ever to discover twins, I didn't have confirmation til week 32!!!!!! Our insurance dropped at week 24 and although I was insistant that there were two she refused the u/s saying she wouldn't give them to healthy pregnancies. So once insurance picked back up at week 32 we switched doctors and he instantly ordered the u/s, he couldn't find both heartbeats even then, but felt two heads/butts.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

I think I had measured early from the very beginning - although I don't remember the stats right now. I am not that tall (5 ft 4 in) and somewhat petite, but I do know I was wearing maternity pants early on - they were big but all my other clothes were too small! I think that was around 8-10 weeks. Crazy, huh?!

My doctor didn't believe me when I said that something was really different - she insisted that no two pregnancies were alike (which I do know is true) but this one was SO different from the beginning. I was REALLY sick (not sick AT ALL with my first) and REALLY tired. And it did not taper off after the first trimester. I would say I felt this way until 17-18 weeks. When I mentioned it again to the doctor, she listened with a doppler and said she only heard one heartbeat. That was at about 16-17 weeks. When I went in for an amnio and u/s around the 19-20th week, that's when they found the two babies!

So you could very well have a couple little miracles in there! Dopplers aren't very reliable for uncovering twins.

    Let us know!

Pam-Yeah I think this is the longest 5 weeks ever! I just want to know.

Twinnylou-Laughing at your post about your friend. So she only had one though huh? That is funny.

Mommyof2-32 weeks! Ahh, you are a saint to wait that long. So give me tips on how you waited??

Reallytiredmom-I think I officially went to maternity pants at 13-14 weeks. I have a tilted uterus though, so it really wasn't sticking out in the begininng. I really feel as if I have popped this week though(16 weeks). Oh, and I am still sick now too, and tired. Maybe it is two, maybe it is just one stubborn baby![IMG]

I'll let everyone know. Ultrasound is still set for Jan. 3rd. Thanks.

    Hi ladies,

I don't know if you remember me or not, but at 15 weeks I measured 18 weeks and my mid-wife said I had a possibility of twins. Anyway, today was our official ultrasound and I wanted to come update. Just one baby. I would have loved two, but it was just one. I am still measuring ahead, but oh well. Thanks for the support ladies and good luck.
