Hi all. Just wanted to let you know how things are going. On Mondaly night at about midnight I started contracting. I tried all the stuff, laying down, drinking water, taking a bath, etc. Nothing worked. I called L&D and they told me to come in. Went there and was having contrax about every 10 minutes or so. They decided to give me a shot of terbutaline. That stuff is awful. I was shaking and got really anxious. Then they gave me another shot. And some pills, not sure what they were. Nothing worked. Then they started talking about Magnesium Sulfate. By this time the contractions were about 5 min apart and I was dialated to a 3, 80% effaced. The hospital I was at only had a level 2 nursery so they moved me to the 'big' hospital with the level 3 NICU. They gave me a bolus of mag sulfate and demerol and I have never felt so awful in my life. Then they gave me the frist of the steriod shots. Now it is 38 hours later, I've had my second shot of steroids, the girls are doing great and I've only had about 8-10 contractions. Tomorrow at 6 am I get to go off the mag and they will let whatever happens happen. I'm so excited to be off the mag, but at the same time I'm really nervous about having these little ones too soon. BTW, they are weighing in the 5lb 9oz range. So at least that's good. Wish me luck. I hope this isn't too rambling, the mag makes you feel way beyond drunk. I'm gonna have my mom proof read it so if it sounds like a crazy person, it's her fault. :winking0009:

I'm glad you stopped it in time to get the steroids! That will do wonders for the babies. I'm sorry about the mag; I was on it a few days with DD1 and barely remember I was so out of it. In the end, after the mag adn weeks of hospital bedrest, I ended up being induced when she was almost 2 wks late! So there's hope you'll keep 'em cooking a few more weeks. Update us when you can and hang in there! :hug99:

I am sorry that you are having to deal with these medications. It is good that the contractions have slowed down and the girls are doing well though. I wish you the best and hope that you keep them in as long as you can. Good luck and keep us updated. :love0028:

Hi, I was on it for two months! Hang in there it sucks no matter how long you are on it, I wouldn't wish anyone to have to experience mag sulfate not for even 5 seconds. It sounds like you and your babies are going to be just fine, your doing great!

I don't know how you did it. My hat is off to you. They keep calling me Captain Jack because I can only open one eye or I get sick!

Hang in there. Mag Sulfate is the WORST. I had 2 Mag "vacations": one at 27W & the other at 31W. Honestly, my contractions never stopped, but I didn't deliver until 36W5D.
Mag is the worst; I can't express that enough (as you now know). Focus on the End Goal- this is just one step to getting 2 healthy, full term babies.

Oh, Heather hang in there! I had a very similar experience and agree Mag sucks!!! But, it's keeping those babies in there long enough to get those precious steriod shots!
I hope your mag vacations lasted longer than mine - about 12 hours each!
    Good luck!!

I went through it twice- at 24 then 32 weeks. It sucks esp with the terbutaline but well worth it to get them their steroids. My boys were born at 33 weeks with no breathing problems. We had a couple of NICU weeks as feeders and growers though. Hang in there and good luck.

Hope it does it's job. I went into PTL at 27 weeks 3 days, got terbutaline and the first steroid shot and sent home . . . contractions started right back up as soon as I got home. Ended up back at the hospital, on magnesium sulfate and ambulanced to the bigger hospital with a NICU (started at a tiny community hospital that only had one isolette total!) Ended up delivering by emergency c-section at 27 w 4 d, before even getting the second dose of steroids.

Remember that you are far enough along that your babies will likely have no long term problems even if you deliver right away. Mine were born much earlier, and at by age 2 were testing way ahead developmentally.

Someone described Mag Sulfate to me as having all of the bad aspects of being drunk with none of the good. I thought that was pretty accurate.

    Best of luck!

oh Gosh.. I am so sorry you are going through this. I know how aweful mag sulf. is.. I was on it for a loooong while because of preeclampsia with my first baby and I will never forget that feeling.

Good luck tomorrow with welcoming your babies. Sending lots of prayers that they are healthy.

I feel for you, I couldn't read, write, type, could barely eat cause I got nauseous (didn't gain any weight for the 2 months I spend in the hospital), I was so hot all the time that I had the AC on full and the only nurse who wanted to come into my room was this cute older woman going through menopause :)

You can hang in there another couple of weeks good luck!

Hang in there Mag sucks. I did it for 2 weeks and then delivered at 32 weeks. I kept smelling a bakery smell and dreaming that the nurses were offering me donuts all the time. Its definitely a mind-altering drug. Great that you got the steroid shots. I did too and I attribute them to how well my boys did when they were born.
