Madison and Brooke have arrived!

On Monday, May 4th I went to the hospital for a scheduled induction. I was 38 weeks and 2 days. Both girls were head down, vertex and vertex. Although I was told that I was a great candidate for vaginal birth, I knew anything could happen with twins. I was ready to try vaginal, but worried about what the outcome would be. It turns out I had no need to worry.

The doctor came and broke my water at 8:30am. He said that I was already dilated to 4cm and 90 percent effaced. The lowest level of pitocin was started at 9:30 and I got the epidural right away. The epidural was great - took away all the aches and pains I had been experiencing and I was even able to lay on my right side (something I hadn't done in a month). DH and I rested and watched a little tv while the contractions began working their magic. At 11:15 I was at 8cm and at 12:30 I was fully dilated at 10cm. Baby A's head was at zero station at this point, and they wanted her to be at least a 2 before they wheeled me to the OR. At 1pm I was checked again and the nurse said, "Oh, baby's head is right there!" I was at 3 station and ready to go. They took me to the OR and got the bed all set up for delivery, the doctor got his instruments ready, and the nurses were all in place. A good contraction came on and I started pushing. I pushed about 6 times and at 1:23pm, Madison Frances was born. She cried right away and started to pink up well. They put her immediately on my chest and the doctor broke Baby B's water. As I was looking intently at my new little girl the doctor said that I was getting a good contraction and asked me to push. So with Madison on my chest I started pushing and in less than one full push, at 1:30pm, Brooke Audrey was born. Brooke was also put immediately on my chest. All 5 nurses in the room stood there staring at me and telling me how easy I made it look. I was pretty shocked at how easy it went myself. None of them had anything to do - they all just laughed and congratulated me on a job well done. What a relief. Next thing I knew they were unlocking the wheels on my bed and taking me back to my room, with my girls still on my chest.

Madison Frances (middle name for my grandma) was 6 pounds, 3 ounces and 19 inches.

Brooke Audrey (middle name for DH's grandma) was 6 pounds, 7 ounces and 19 inches.

The hospital stay went well and we were able to come home 2 days later, on Wednesday. Breast feeding is going just fine, but I don't have quite enough milk yet for both babies. I am doing some breast feeding, some pumping, and a little supplementing. The girls weights went down to 5.12 and 5.15 when we left the hospital. I went back for a consult with lactation yesterday (Friday) and they were back up to 6.0 and 6.4. So the supplementing is the right thing for us at this point. Lactation told me to call and check in every 3 days or so and that eventually, by their gestational due date, the girls might be vigorous eaters and ready to breast feed more exclusively. They do great at it now, but tire easily so I can see why this is good advice for our situation. Plus it provides me a little time to rest so that I am not sitting on the couch for an hour or more per feeding.

Very similar to me ... also 38w2d, also induced ... 4 1/2 cm when I got there and they were there in 4 1/2 hours!
