    Lyana and Sariah’s Birth story

Today was the day. Oct 9, 2007. I couldn’t sleep all night I woke up at 4am to use the potty and went back to bed till about 5am, just laying there. Finally I just got up and started getting things ready as we had to leave by 7:30 am to get the kids to mom’s before heading to the hospital.

We got to mom’s about 8am and sat there and chatted for a while. As we were sitting there the phone rang, it was my sister who happens to work at the hospital. She called to tell me that they wanted to move my section up. My mom said to what time as I was suppose to be there at 9am for section at 11. My sister said they want to start me at 9:30. HOLY crap. The butterflies really started to kick in. I didn’t have anytime to process it. I went to the bathroom and we headed to the hospital. We had to check in which takes forever even though I was already pre-registered. Headed back to the triage room and changed into my gown. The flow of nurses started to grow and grow. I had about 5 nurses all doing things, asking questions, taking blood, etc. The u/s tech came in to do an u/s as my sister told them I wanted to check the position of the babies before I consented to an u/s. She started and said Baby A is head down. WHOOHOO I thought yeah I get to vaginal birth. My sister came in and was like WHAT! Since she was going to be the surg tech in the delivery. Once she finished the u/s I said well I need to use the bathroom. So I went in and said a prayer of thanks. I was so happy to be able to attempt a vaginal birth. I got back to my room and the lady was trying to get an IV in my hand. OUCH. They ended up having to put it in my bend of my arm as I have terrible veins. By this time Dr Ramsey came in and wanted to check my cervix. She said I was 2.5 cm dilated. Yeah I knew the contractions I was having had to have been doing something. She felt around on my tummy and said well you will have to have an epidural. Ugh that’s 1 reason I wanted a vaginal birth so I wouldn’t have to have anything in my back. But I said that it was a small price to pay. Well she said I want to get the u/s machine back in here and take a look myself. So the tech brought the machine back in. She looked around and said baby A is head down, but B is now breech and her butt is presenting first, meaning it was closest to the cervix. UGH there goes my hopes of a vaginal delivery. I was so upset, I almost broke down right there. The dr. left and my sister came back in and said you need to make up your mind. Lol Like I have a choice. So anyways we were back to plan A. I had to drink that nasty antacid stuff. Oh my goodness that stuff was nasty. I walked to the OR which was FREEZING. I sat on the table as I was prepared for my spinal. The anestioligist was awesome. He said so your Kelly’s sister? I said yes, he said well I won’t hold that against ya. Lol I said well thanks I appreciate that. He said well she told me your really worried about a spinal headache and also about getting sick? He said I will take good care of ya. He prepped my back for the spinal. It really didn’t hurt just uncomfortable and the not knowing what was going to happen was nerve racking. The nurse that held me was very sweet. He put the spinal in and said we are gonna slam you to the table in just a sec. And then it was SLAM. I said wow you weren’t lying were you? Lol Being it’s a weighted drug, not sure what that means you have to be in position pretty quick I guess for it to work like its supposed to. It was so freaky to have your legs go completely numb and not being able to move them though you want to so bad. I started to having major heartburn from that antacid crap and being on my back. The dr. asked if I could feel her I said no, she said well I’m pinching you pretty hard. Next thing I know Jason was called in. He sat down beside me and asked me how I was doing? I said I was fine, but it felt really strange. Next thing I know the dr. said HOLY CRAP Lisa this baby is HUGE. Lol I told J to stand up and get pics. I heard baby A screaming and crying, she was NOT happy to be out. It was the best sound in the world. I started to cry and was over come with so many emotions. The Anesteologist asked if I was feeling any pain. I said no. He said are you just happy, I said yes. Jason was so lost in the moment he was just starring. I said HELLO pics. Next thing the dr. said Lisa this one is bigger than the first. She said you did a great job growing these babies. I heard baby b crying, again I started bawling knowing that they were both here safe and sound and had a good set of lungs on them. I asked if they were both girls. Lol

J was standing all this time and watching them take the girls out and remove the placenta, which he said was HUGE. He was so fascinated by everything and every time I looked up to talk to him all I could see was the reflection in his glasses, ick. I said I can see the reflection and that’s just gross. LOL they were all laughing.

Baby A weighed in at 6lbs 11oz 19 inches long born at 10:19am

Baby B weighed in at 7lbs 10oz 20 inches long born at 10:20am

I only got to see them for a few minutes and then I couldn’t hold them, could only look and rub their faces with my fingers. They were taken to the nursery. The Aneste gave me fenigren so that I wouldn’t get sick. That made me so tired. I just laid there with my eyes closed listening to everyone talk around me. They asked if I was sleeping? Lol I said no but I cant keep my eyes open. Ugh. I should have not taken that.

The dr. asked if I was sure I wanted a tubal? She said you do a great job growing babies. I said I’m sure right now but I am under the influence of drugs. Again they all laughed. Lol I was on a roll. They were finished with everything and the dr. asked me if I wanted staples or stitches. I said I don’t know as I’ve never had either. So she said well lets ask Kelly what you should have. My sister said stitches. So that’s what I got. My sister told me later that she already had the cart set up for stitches cause staples are no fun. She did say that Dr. Ramsey was probably upset cause they take longer but oh well.

I was removed from the table and it felt so weird to know they were rolling me on my side and lifting me up and I couldn’t feel anything from the chest down. I was taken to my room and the girls were brought in shortly after. It was so great to hold my girls in my arms.

I was in recovery for about 45mins or so. I was given ice chips, thank goodness. I was so thirsty from not drinking since before midnight. And I’m a big water drinker anyways. I was able to keep that down so I was able to go to my room. Though I was very sleepy and feeling quite drugged up. Lol

My legs felt so weird when I touched them with my hand they felt like wax or something fake and I couldn’t tell I was touching a part of my own body. Very strange feeling.

We had to stay in the hospital extra days. My iron dropped to an alarming 6.4 which in most people would cause them to pass out. I was lucky and still able to function. I was quickly put on iron pills and they were talking about a transfusion. My iron made it back up to 6.8 before leaving the hospital. The girls stayed an extra day also as they became quite jaundice and need to be under the billi blankets and in the billi bed.

We were able to go home on Sunday. YEAH!

Our family is now complete and Jason and I could not have asked for a better gift of two times the fun to end our trying to conceive days. It’s exciting to look forward to our adventures ahead. It is a bit sad to know that we won’t enjoy the baby stage anymore.

God has truly blessed our family.

I really appreciated all the detail and photos of your birth story. I learned so much about what I am to expect at delivery. The epidural is what scares me most, and it sounds like it isn't as bad as I am thinking. You have one big huge beautiful family. I love the names for the babies too!!! Congrats and good job growing such nice healthy babies. I wanna try and do that too.
