I'm asking this question because the nutritionist at WIC kind of got me confused  She asked if the twin's drank soda (no), kool-aid (no) & then asked me if they ate lunch meat like bologna, turkey, ham. I said yes, because they do. She didn't say anything for there and went on asking more questions. I figured maybe its not good since she grouped it with other not suggestible for children foods/drinks? Maybe I'm wrong? If there is something wrong with giving lunch meat, what is it?

It has a lot of sodium in it and nitrates too... however in my opinion its fine in moderation. As I type this my girls are eating a grilled cheese sandwich with a piece of ham in it.

I agree with Leighann. It's good in moderation, ours get lunch meat every once in a while.

I do lunch meat about once a week b/c Ryan LOVES ham! My DH eats two sandwiches a day so to save money on lunch meat, we make a turkey and a ham every month (or so) and freeze what we don't use and use the rest for sandwich meat. So when my kids get "lunch meat" during the week, they are really getting turkey and ham that we cooked. Does that make sense? I'm feeling slightly sleep deprived!

I buy the Hormel natural stuff, so it's nitrate-free. It's still loaded with sodium, though -- probably more so because it doesn't have other preservatives. But, it's fine in moderation....

Ours get it periodically. We had grilled ham and cheese for lunch today. Like PPs said. It's fine in moderation.

We do lunch meats. Boar's head has no preservatives and lower sodium than others. Of course we only eat turkey as we aren't pork eaters but they get it about twice a week.

We do it a few times a week too, I struggle to get any kind of meat in my twinnies and they seem to like tolerate lunchmeat (some of the time) so I'll throw it in a grilled cheese or in some eggs. Like anything else everything in moderation but I think there are way worse things out there than lunchmeat!!

I don't feed it because of the nitrates. I've found some of the natural lunch meat type and I will buy those eventually, but there is a lot of sodium so I'm cautious... It's a pain though, it's just so easy and that's probably something they would eat too... I've found it's so hard to feed your kids when you pay attention to what's in the food.

We also do it in moderation. Mine love turkey.
