After 27 hours of labor, and eventually needing a c-section, Lucy Joy and Jillian Mary were born on Sunday July 12th at 6:13 and 6:14 a.m. They were born at 38weeks, 5 days gestation.

    Lucy: 6lb. 6oz. 21" long
    Jill: 6lb. 9oz. 19" long

No need for DNA testing, the girls are definately fraternal! One is long, lanky, with dark hair (lucy), and Jill is short, round, with blond hair. They hardly even look like sisters!

My birth story was long, traumatic and frankly, pretty terrible. In fact, poor Jill is in the NICU right now...even though Lucy and I are home. Everything looked great, but we noticed on the second day that Jill quit nursing and seemed to be having these weird little tremors...almost like little seizures. Lots of tests were done, and it appears that it is due to oxygen deprivation...possibly that her cord was being pinched with every contraction...and her liver was deprived of oxygen...which is causing the high liver enzyme numbers and possibly the shakes she is having. Luckily, assuming she continues to eat well, she can come home in 3-7 days...if she backslides, it could be longer, but the doctors are pretty optimistic because she has gotten progressively better since she's been there...like 36 hours.

So, just goes to show that just because you make it to a long gestation, it doesn't guarantee that you will avoid NICU time!!!

No, I didn't end up being induced...my water broke on it's own. But unfortunately, I went 12 hours before I started contracting...and it wasn't strong enough to change my cervix. After hours of laboring like that (unmedicated), I asked for a couple of doses of Stadol...with my son, my labor stopped too, but once I was able to rest for a couple of hours, I progressed rapidly and had him about an hour later...so I thought I would try that again...no such luck. Still at 3 cm. Dr. wanted to section. I thought to first try an epidural (which I never in a million years thought I would ask for)...but only so that they could pump me with Pitocin as quickly and agressively as possible (within safety limits of course)...because even an epidural was prefereable to a c/s and by that point, I had been laboring for over 20 hours and knew that I didn't have the energy/stamina to take on high doses of Pit w/o some help...after a few hours of that, I was *barely* 5 cm and the monitor showed little bitty rolling hills for contractions rather than the steep peaks it should have been considering they were literally pumping me with just about the highest dosage of Pitocin they could...I think my uterus was so overextended (I had 13 pounds of baby and I'm 5'2"!) that it couldn't contract properly.

Finally, after 27 hours, I consented to the c/s. I'm fine with the decision since we tried everything we could to avoid it, but holy moly, this recovery is soooo much different than that of a vaginal birth!
