I went to my OBGYN at 10 weeks, and they did some blood work. I got a call from the nurse 3 weeks later saying everything was good but my thyroid came back low but the doctor thinks it is a mistake; i shouldn't worry and when i come in for my next visit they will repeat it. So i went for my next visit at 14 weeks, and i got a call two week later ( which was tonight) that my thyroid is low and i should address it immediately.
Has anyone had a low thyroid? should i be concerned? does it effect my pregnancy? any information on this topic would be appreciated. I have had absolutely no appetite, i am wondering if this has to do with it, and i have not been gaining enough weight. Now i don't know what to think, i am really concerned.
thank you for your responses in advance.

I had/have this problem too! Its not uncommon for a womans thyroid to go a little weird in pregnancy. My numbers were also VERY low and have been since about 16weeks, when I went to the DR for a lump in my neck. I lost about 33lbs the first tri, Im gaining weight now, But its all baby. My face, arms and legs are all A LOT thinner. People are kind taken back by how much weight I have lost, but the babies are still growing and doing good. I have only gained 22lbs, and Im 30 weeks along.. I have cravings but, over all, I have to really EAT to gain any weight, The last 3 weeks its been a PUSH to pack on 4lbs and I lost 8this last week, despite eatting EVERTHING in sight. I also had the normal, Loss of hair and a hard temp getting warm/cooling off.
My DR has decided to do nothing, until after the girls are born, kinda the wait and see game, hoping that once I deliver I will go back to normal, If I dont go back to normal we will discuss medications.

My doctor told me, eat food with high healthy fats, Milk, cheese, nuts, ect. I MAKE myself eat 3 meals aday. But most of the time when Im eatting Im not hungry. Kind of excited the last 2 weeks I have been finally getting REAL cravings! I hope those help me pack back on some more weight!

Did she say that your TSH was low?

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism(my TSH was always <.01) in the beginning of my twin pregnancy, and I was put on PTU(an anti-thyroid drug) for a few months, and then taken off as my levels stabilized. Since then I have found out that I have a nodule on my thyroid causing my issues, that I will eventually have to have radiation for.

Your thyroid can definitely effect your appetite, and weight gain, and many other things. One of my biggest problems was a rapid heart rate with palpitations, and my doctors attributed it partly to my thyroid problem.

I have hypothyrodism...so my thyroid needs to be checked every 8 weeks when I am pregnant. I also take medicine to control it-and it needs to be controlled throughout the entire pregnancy, as your levels can fluctuate. I would ask about being put on a medicine. You do not want your thyroid levels to get out of control.

I should have stated, my levels are checked monthly, and it is my TSH levels that are LOW. I have an overactive thyroid.

Isn't it weird that my OBGYN thought it was a mistake at first and didn't take any precaution for me to get it monitored earlier in my pregnancy? I am so nervous that it will effect the development of my twins:(

I am hyperthyroid, but thyroid conditions can affect your pregnancy. SO YES, you need to see an endocrinologist.

I developed Graves Disease with my pregnancy too. I was extremely worried about the develepment of my babies, then my doc wanted to put me on meds., really scared me, I didn't want the babies to get any of the side effects of the drugs. But after a second round of blood work, and a long talk with my doctor, we went on the meds. and had my levels checked regularly. I was taken off the meds probably at about 23-26 weeks, and still had my levels checked regularly. It was fine, all good. And the girls are great, no problems so far, the ped. did check their thyroid levels after they were born and they were normal. Crazy what a twin pregnancy will do to your body!!!
