Con is a great solids eater, he just sits there and opens his mouth like a little bird, takes it off the spoon and swallows. And usually grins after. Chase, on the other hand, always wants to grab the spoon to do it himself, and when I put the spoon in his mouth, out comes the tongue and he pushes the food out the majority of the time.
It seems Con lost that tongue-thrust reflex but Chase hasn't yet ... when did your babies lose that?
I should add that I fed them solids for about 2 weeks straight at 5 months and then stopped, and just started up again last week. Even back then Con had solids down pat and Chase didn't. TIA!!!!

Honestly, I can't remember my guys doing that. I know I've always heard if they push it away with their tongues that means they don't want it... so does he do it at every meal?

Ava always pushes the food out with her tongue! Addison doesn't - she just swallows - but it is weird because Ava seems to be more eager to eat and Addison is better at it but really could care less about solids!? and for the last few days - Addison has started this blowing thing - which is really cute but makes feeding time a little more interesting! I think I need to start wearing a bib myself at their feeding times!

    HI,

my son Wyatt has a stronger tongue thrust reflex. One way to help it is to place the spoon in the sides of his mouth -- alternating sides. I think Wyatt lost this reflex around 7-8 mos -- but when I fed him on the side, it really helped.

One of mine does the same thing although it is getting better, she is worse when she is very eager to eat. I hold the spoon in a little longer, so that she more or less has to suck on the spoon first. I have fed them solids for about 2 months now and I can definately see improvement.

Mine still have it, but we haven't tried solids on a regular basis...just cereal "for fun" a few times a week. Don't think they've actuallly swallowed ANY of it!

Mine were born at 36w 0d. We started oatmeal at 6 months and DS thrusted a little bit. Thrusting is supposed to be a reflex that keeps babies from ingesting anything foreign. I wasn't aware that you could do anything to keep it from happening until their bodies stopped doing it naturally, so the side feeding tip is an interesting way around that. :good:

I'll have to try that. Thanks!
