Ok, so for the past month, I've been trying to introduce the sippy. Everytime they see it on their tray, they cry. WTH?

    I've tried for a few days...then took a week off...tried again for a few days...took another week off...tired again for a few days...took a week off.

I'm not going to make the same mistake I made with my first...buying a ton of different styles to see which ones they like...maybe I'm playing Mommy hardball, but I don't have the extra cash, or time, to go shopping for multiple styles so I guess I'm sticking to one style. The Gerber kind with the 2 handles. I took the inside spouty thing out so it would come out faster and they didn't have to suck hard to figure out what was in it. That kinda worked, but then they started choking on it so I put the valve back in and cut it a bit so they didn't have to suck as hard. I even put apple juice in it so they liked the taste more.

I dunno. They cry everytime they see it. Any different suggestions? I don't want to make it a negative experience, so I'm taking another week off, but geesh, what's the problem?? At almost 8 months, shouldn't they want it by now??

No, I don't think so. I never stressed about sippy cups. I think I used the same kind you did, and I also stuck with one kind. I left the sippy valve part on the inside of the cup. The only thing I did, was at meal times I placed the cups on their highchair trays, and nothing else was on the trays. I fed both girls at the same time, I'd give one a spoonful, then the other a spoonful, etc. Since there was nothing else on their trays they started playing with the cups of water. I didn't push it. If I noticed them playing with it I might move it toward their mouths one time, but that's it, I mostly just let them play with it.

Around 12 months old they started drinking water during their meals, on their own. As soon as they did that we transitioned from bottles. At 8 months old there is no need to rush it!

My boys didn't really get the hang of it the sippy until they were just around 12 months. I didn't even introduce it until they were probably 10-11 months. I wouldn't worry about them not wanting to use the cup and I would probably just wait another month all together before giving it a try. I would give it to my boys away from meal time with just a little water in it and they would just play with it at first. Eventually they got the idea and at 12 months when I made the transition from formula to whole milk, they drank it in their sippies.
    Good luck!

We started around 7 months with it. You could just put it away for a bit so you stop the crying and then bring it back out in a couple of weeks. Mine didnt really start to get it until they were about 9 months old. I know you said you dont want to buy more, but you could try a straw sippy and see if they like that better. Mine loved the Nuby Straw Sippy.

Apple juice can be kind of sour- what about pear or white grape? I always give them a taste from it so they know something good is inside then let them have at it!

My boys just transitioned to a sippy, we used "think baby" ones from my sil. They were more like a bottle, it was a soft spout but a sippy shape they took it well. I then got them Gerber "Nuk" ones. They were soft spouted too but they LOVED them. I couldn't find them anywhere to get a few more. Canada is funny that way though, it's always harder to find things.

They now take the Gerber ones w the soft spout and handle but they used to cry everytime they saw them too. I just started sticking their soother in their mouths, letting them suck and then sticking the sippy in their mouth so they had the sucking motion. Good luck!

I didn't even introduce sippies until after a year... hopefully they get the hang of them for you!

I can't think of which version you have... is the spout soft or hard? some that we've had are very hard to suck out... and we ended up waiting to let the kids try them until later. the ones we started out on were the Nuby ones with the soft spouts...

good luck... ours didn't get it fully until 15 months.

Agreed! Mine didn't really take to the sippies until 11 mos?? Even then it was spotty at best. What worked for mine were the gerber hard spouted ones, and removing the valve to let it flow. Then at 12 mos or so, my nanny suggested getting some straw cups (had the nuby straw cup and they didn't like it), but the Munchin and Playtex ones were a HIT! Anyway, kudos for you for not buying a bazillion different types of cups (they have a lot of pieces!!!!!!). They'll get it.

Honestly, with the twins, I don't think I really started giving it to them until close to a year. I started much earlier with the older kids, but just didn't have the time or patience this time around. It worked out fine waiting & I think they picked up much quicker that way.

Mine got the hang of straw cups pretty early, but they weren't able to use the sippy cups until around 12 months. There's no hurry.

I wouldn't stress too much about it. I introduced the sippy cup around 6 months, but I was never consistent with it-and by their first birthday-I gave it to them consistently-and they did fine. Just put it away for now and try it later on-there's no need to rush it. I agree with Tina-I think they picked it up much quicker when they were older... When they were younger-it was just a toy!

Maybe I'm the crazy one here, but I give my boys sippies of water to play with after I feed them their "spoon-fed" meals now. They don't drink any of it - I can tell because the front of their clothes gets all wet when they let the water dribble. But I got the kind with handles and a "bottle-like" nipple with a sort of star shape valve in it. I figure they can gum at it and practice using the handles. Since they're still nursing and all, they don't *need* to drink anything else, I just figured it'd be something fun for them to start getting the hang of?

Watch, in 3 months I'll come crawling back, "My boys think sippies are just chew toys that leak!"

My eight month old son hates the sippy cup as well. He knows how to drink from it but hates it. He is addicted to his bottle and juice and we are considering looking into BAA(Bottle Addict Anonymous) I think you just have to pick your fights.. Right now the bottle is winning with us.
