I know it's only a small procedure but I am getting nervous about it. My DS is going in for surgery tomorrow to correct a very mild case of chordee. I am starting to get very nervous about it. The reason I am so nervous is the anesthesia. My husband had a very bad reaction to two types of anesthesia that were used on him years ago during an emergency appendectomy. He has been diagnosed as having malignant hyperthermia. That is when your body reacts very badly to anesthesia and your body temperature rises very quickly. He woke up in an ice bath as they were trying to get his body temperature back to normal. It can be hereditary so they are going to treat my son as if he has this issue and be ready for it anything starts to happen. So..I know that everything is prepared and being done to control this but I am still scared to death for him to go under for this surgery.
He was in the hospital for 8 days back in January for bacterial meningitis. He made a full recovery, thank goodness. But, I just don't even want to bring him to another hospital and put him through all this. I know the surgery has to be done as it will effect him later in life. It just is awful to have to bring him somewhere and put him in harm's way, you know? He has no idea what is coming (which is a good thing in a way, I guess). I just don't want to see that look on his face like when he was scared in the hospital back in January. Anyway..this is different but I guess, I review the post, it's bringing me back to how scary that was and I don't want to bring him back to a hospital. I know that it could be SO much worse, don't get me wrong. But, it's still scary. Please send your good thoughts his way. I really would appreciate it.
    Thanks for letting me vent.

akuaba--my son had surgery three months ago for hypospadius and chordee repair. I was extremely nervous but it went SO smoothly. He barely reacted to even having the surgery. Similarly my husband reacts badly to anesthesia so this was a concern and the doctors reassured us that anesthesia has gotten a lot better in the last decade. We had all the same fears but in the end, all of them were unfounded. I hope that helps:)

Sending lots of  your way. Max had open heart surgery at 8 weeks old and spent 7 days in the hospital with a nurse in his room 24 hours a day. The day of the surgery was the slowest moving and longest day of my life. I won't lie, when they brought in that tiny hospital gown and asked us to get him into it both DH and I lost it. Tears were flowing everywhere. It is very scary when your baby is having surgery.

I will be praying for your little one, you, your family and all the people at the hospital who will be doing the surgery. I pray you will have an uneventful day and things will go well. I put my trust in God and the hospital staff on 7/22/2008 and they gave me my beautiful healthy little boy back after a 7 hour surgery.

thanks to all of you for the well wishes and your thoughts and prayers. you all are the best, ya know that!!! all is well. thank goodness that is over. it was nerve-wracking to say the least but it went better than i thought it was. due to the past history of malignant hyperthermia with my husband they had to use some different drugs to sedate my son. but, it worked out fine if not better. they actually gave him a suppository (i didn't even know these existed) to sedate him before they brought him into the O.R. so..i was able to hold him while they put it in (he didn't even blink) and then hold him for 10 minutes after in a rocking chair and just rocked him to sleep. and they took him away to the O.R. he did not have any memory of the O.R. or people in scrubs or anything like that. i am so happy for that. the surgery went as they planned. and he had no adverse effects from the anesthesia. thank goodness! now, onto the healing part. his "wee-wee" looks awful but that is to be expected. i am putting GLOBS of vaseline no it per directions for the doctor so it will stay moist and not stick to his diaper. poor kid. they prescribed tylenol with codeine for 5 days. every 4 hours. i think it is really helping with the pain. he is playing as normal. the only thing that was bothersome was when he come out of the anesthesia and he was really disoriented and crying badly. but, again, that is normal and only lasted for about an hour or so. he napped all the way home in the car from the hospital. well..i must go as both little ones just awoke from their nap. it's a "jammie" day at the house. low-key playing and sesame street on the t.v.
take care and thanks SO much for the support. i love this place.
