So my parents come back from vacation, I am getting the girls' lunch ready, I hear them all (girls and my parents) giggling and go back into the living room and Maia has blue around her mouth. I asked what it was and apparently my stepfather thought it would be a good idea to let them try some blue lollipop! ON WHAT PLANET IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO GIVE AN 8MO OLD SUGAR?!?! I am so freaking mad! "But they liked it, their little arms and legs were going crazy" Well DUH, who doesntlike blue lollipops?!?!? ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Edited for clarity because I'm mad and make no sense!
:hug99: Cohlee, I'm sorry they mad you upset. I hope you told them that you don't want them having this stuff so early. :hug99: I know that my parents and inlaws are very different from me when it comes to raising children, in the food department especially. <_< I let them know very early on that I must be asked about ANYTHING that goes in their mouth. I know my mom gave us coke at the age of one! And I know I survived and all, but I'm just doing things differently and so far they all are listening to me. I hope they ask you next time. :hug99:
Oh man, I would be livid too. I had to make it clear when the boys were younger that under no circumstances were they to be given anything w/o my consent. Derek had a milk allergy and I did not want anyone/anything dairy to set off the diarrhea button.
irritating & kind of funny (the blue mouth part) at the same time!!! sorry......! yeah, who doesnt like a blue lollipop?!
*raising hand slowly* ummm i don't like blue lollipops but seriously i totally understand where you are coming from and how pi**ed you are!
UGH!! Sorry Cohlee! We've BTDT with my MIL before  Hoping they listened to you and will ask before they give them anything in the future April
:shok: :shok: :shok: :shok: Eek! That's just crazy. Something my FIL would do though! I can so see it. Today he goes, "So when can they get ice cream?" How about when I say they can?? They're old school, from Italy, and over there, they "fed their babies everything. Just a little taste." This is also the same man who said that the reason Anthony's feet point outwards are because of his diaper! :rotflmbo:
I dealt with the same thing with my MIL.... only not as bad... I found out that a few months ago, they were probably 6 months old or so... not even having puffs or anything at this point... that she gave them some of her saltine crackers when DF went to have lunch with her. I was freakin mad. I guess Austin coughed quite a bit and spit it out!! Of course this is the woman who wanted me to put cereal in the bottles at 2 weeks old and give them mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving when they were 2 1/2 months old!!! grrr.... people I tell ya, listen to us mothers.... we are the only voice that matters in this!! LOL Shannon
My mom did this on Father's day with a piece of bun. I told her that DD couldn't have that and two seconds later I see my mom's hand go to DD's mouth and her little jaw start moving. We are careful about no wheat/milk/etc yet so I was not happy and told her so. She looked at MIL and they both gave "the look" to each other. Which made me CRAZY. I totally understand how you feel. Everyone who doesn't have yound kids responds by saying "people have been ....... for years and are just fine". It drives me nuts. It's like they forget that back in the day lots of kids died from doing those things.
I was so mad and I think my parents knew this because I didnt even talk about it. So they got the girls some fruit popsicle things that have like no sugar (less than 5mg which is less than juice) in them so when they want to give the girls 'sweets' its something I am ok with. I just dont see any reason for kids to have sugar that young. I am such a junkfood junkie, I love candy bars and gummy things and chocolate so its not that I have anything against sugar, I just dont want to introduce it for a long long time! Like I was thinking sugar-free pumpkin pie or something similar for their bday cakes.
You know, this is kinda off topic, but I thought I would post anyways... One of DH's great aunts was mentioning this woman(in Italy I think) who watched her grandchild everyday. And since that grandchild wasa baby-or whatever age-she gave the child EVERYTHING to eat. Now??? She's ALLERGIC to EVERYTHING. I guess it's pretty bad. I didn't hear the whole story-but hopefully MIL heard enough!
cohlee, I'd be mad too. Luckily, I think I've only gotten the strange looks on a couple of occasions about the girls not having 'x' yet.
I would have been mad too! My parents know they have to ask me before they give the girls anything.. even now. I didn't give them sweets until after their first birthday. They've had ice cream and cookies since turning 1, but never candy! I don't see the point... they have plenty of time for candy when they get older.

They have yet to make a blue candy that doesn't taste like chemicals to me (and I love candy!). I go through this all the time with both sets of grandparents. In my case, O has a slow metabolism, and if she ate like they want to feed her, she'd be so overweight (confirmed by the ped). They always say 'Oh, it's only 1 day,' but if you add up all those days...
last week my mil got a HUGE spoon out and was going to feed ivana sherbert  i don't trust my IL's at ALL. they would give them everything if i wasn't there

I understand completely. My FIL gave my Sarah a sip of Sprite at a resturant before she was a year old. Thank goodness she just spit it out. My girls have never had soda to drink. My FIL will also come to the house with M&M's hidden in his overalls for the girls to snack on--they eat and eat until they're full--just drives me bananas.
Besides the sugar, it's a huge choking hazard! I swear, sometimes people just aren't thinking! And what's with everyone always wanting to give babies food to "see what they do"? and then act like the mom is a big buzzkill. I understand, have gone through similar things too.
Speaking of sugar, I was feeding the boys Heinz Stage 2 apricot dessert the other day when I saw that it has sugar in it, I would say quite a bit from the sweet taste. I guess I should have known with the word dessert on the jar, but since everyone says not to feed them sugar I sort of trusted Heinz.
