liquid vitamins

The girls have been getting liquid vitamins in one bottle a day since we brought them home from the hospital. Now that we are transitioning from bottles to sippies I wonder how I'll get them to take their vitamin since they never finish what is in their sippy cup.

[hahahhahahahaha... :rotflmbo: No bottles by 1 year, we aren't even close to NO bottles!]

Sorry for the random outburst, we are seriously going to start transitioning now and want to plan ahead for a day when they drink milk out of sippy cups. I'm going to ask our pedi about this at their 1 year appointment next week, but figured I'd check with the experts first

    Thanks!

How much volume are the vitamins? Would they just swallow them from a spoon? we give all medicines through a syringe but am thinking to try the spoon. my guess is if the flavour is good enought they would open wide for it.

Its 1ml and tastes AWFUL! They won't just take it straight.. I have to mix it with something, but can't put it in food since they share their food (one bowl, one spoon). I may try to mix it in a tiny amount of watered down juice in a sippy (haven't given them juice yet so maybe it will be a treat).

Mine always took their liquid vitamins straight from a syringe.

For awhile they were on Prevacid for reflux, which had to be dissolved in liquid. I would make them each a very small bottle with the prevacid in it to be sure they finished it, and then gave them the rest of their milk afterwards. You could try the same thing when you switch to sippies.

    Good luck!

my girls share their food too but I put 2 syringe fulls into one little cup of Mott's Applesauce. Then they split it. One may get a tiny bit more then the other but I don't worry about it!

Maybe they can do chewable vitamins at that age.

Besides the obvious - hiding it in food - have you thought about changing brands so that the supplement doesn't taste bad? I know how nasty liquid vitamins taste, which is why I have my kids on Juice Plus+. It's fruits and veggies in a capsule, chewable and gummie. And, they taste good. I looked into this when I was looking for a multi-vitamin for my kids. I worked at a health food store and wanted something safe and effective and this is both. It's safe because it is just food. And, it's effective because it is written up in medical journals to actually work - unlike thousands of other supplements out there. If you want more information, please let me know. I am a rep, and would be happy to help you. Here's my website for more info: Juice Plus+ I know children who have started taking Juice Plus+ as early as 12 months.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! The vitamin they are on now is by prescription, but I will speak to our pedi next week about switching to something they can eat or that tastes better. -Leighann

Actually, our vitamins came with a dropper. The first couple of times, they didn't really care for it. I found if I just squirt the whole thing in their mouth, they had no choice but to take it. If you do it slow it becomes harder. They actually got pretty used to the taste and the whole process of taking them. I do it every morning, usually right after bfast. They are very good about them and when I say "Come on girls, time for vitamins," they both come running to the bathroom. I always brush their teeth right after because I'm worried that the vitamins can stain their teeth and it helps to get the flavor out of their mouths.

This is exactly how it is for us too! Except I don't brush their teeth immediately afterwards, they drink their milk. :good: Their vitamins taste nasty, but they are used to it and don't fight me on it... anymore. Good luck!

Maybe put it in a small amount of milk in a sippy that you know they'll finish? Then if they want more milk, add more.

I don't know how anyone hides the vitamin in liquid. It tastes so bad, especially if it is the one with Iron. I give it to the kids in the bath. I swear, it took them about a year to get use to it. They use to spit some out in the tub and the whole bath water smelled like metal. Now they usually just swallow. I don't give it every day though. Some days I give an OTC one without Iron or Flouride.
