We're going to stay with some relatives who live on a lake. Last year, I managed to avoid taking them out on the lake by saying they were just too little (8-9 pounds). This year, I'm not sure that is going to fly. They are only 19 pounds though and the life jackets I've seen are for 30 pounds or more. I am NOT taking them out without proper fitting life jackets. Do they make them for kids less than 20 pounds? I'm also not sure I want to spend a lot of money on life jackets for 2-3 boat rides this summer, especially if the life jackets won't fit them next year. Ugh! I know I'm just going to be viewed as being over protective about this. They were already saying that about me last summer. Thankfully, I know my DH will back me up.

I was just at Sam's Club today and was looking at their life jackets, Body Glove does make life jackets for children 30 lbs and under:

At the Sam's by me, they were about 19.00 each.

Good luck and enjoy your vacation! If relatives call you overprotective, that's their issue, not yours.

Yes, there are infant ones like the other ladies said. I got ours last year at Costco, I love the neoprene ones with a zipper up the front. I think they retail for closer to $40-50, but I think I got them for $20... yes, make sure you get ones that are for the appropriate size, you don't want them coming off... have fun on the lake!! :)

I got some great life jackets at the Dollar Store. I don't know if they have one in your area, but they are the only life jackets that don't ride up around the girls' necks when they get into the water (the girls have them on in my avi). I couldn't believe they had them there, but they were $18 and came in small which was 22 lbs but they fit really snug (I had to get my girls 35 - 50 lbs and they fit them perfect), so no doubt they would fit yours. They had several different colors to choose from. I was really impressed with them.

My inlaws have a lakehouse as well. I will not allow them to go on the boat. My mil got them life jackets for $20 each. They are really really nice. Mine are for 15-25 lbs. They are bright yellow. We bought the boys in the lake with them this past weekend and the life jackets worked well although the boys weren't a fan of them.

I can't remember the brand but I will ask my mil this evening and post.

This is the website. She bought the neoprene ones. She got the yellow ones at a discount for $20. I bet they discontinued the yellow ones because of the color. I don't care what color the life jackets are as long as they work.

We got ours at Bass Pro. My DD needed the infant one and DS needed the toddler one. I do like the Neoprene one's that zip up the front (as a pp mentioned). They run about $40.

We have this kind. They are for 0-50 pounds so you can get a lot of years out of them. My boys wore them at 8 months and still wear them now.

The advice we received at West Marine was to get a jacket with a flap float at the neck. This style offers the most comfort in a jacket likely to put them face-up should they fall overboard. I know we bought them on sale for about $14/each.

ETA: Ugh... hate this new format. The link isn't showing so here is the site: http://www.stearnsflotation.com/dyn_prod.php?p=STR3303&k=78025

yes, the main thing you want is the neck flap thing that makes them float with their head above water. We also just realized that the front/chest is where all the floatation is, and the back of it is just to keep it on... it all works together to float them face up. good luck! ours have enjoyed boat rides since 10 days old... (not my first choice... but I was napping.. and dh had them out on the boat putting around the lake at 10 days old... ugh! they survived, and even enjoyed going tubing at a year!) Enjoy your time at the lake.
