So yesterday could have been a lot better. We had our level 2 u/s. They did Baby A, Addi first. Addi is 100% healthy and according to the peri has a spine that should be in teaching textbooks. When they got to Austin I could tell things weren't right. Apparently Austin has a cyst on his chroid plexus. Cysts are a soft marker for Trisomy 18. The cyst is the only marker. In fact, aside from the cyst Austin has perfect anatomy. The peri said he struggles with the decesion to tell parents about the cysts when they are the only marker b/c they are a normal part of fetal development and occur in 30% of babies and go away by 26 weeks.

Does anyone else have experience with this?!?!?!?

    Kristen,
My cousin was pregnant the same time I was and when she went for an u/s they found 2 soft markers on her son. Her OB told her to prepare herself for him having Downs Syndrome. Well, when he was born he was perfectly healthy, no sign of Downs Syndrome at all. Now he's a perfect 20 month old. So, soft markers don't always mean DS.

I know it's scary to hear that though.

I don't have experience with that particular marker, but I have read that often that one clears itself up and is fine. We had a different marker, so I know how you are feeling. It turns out that our babies are healthy, but the fear you go through before you find that out is awful. You should also know that finding ONLY one marker is not a good indicator for Tri-18. I have confidence that things will work out for you too. There is a Tri-18 website that gave me hope because I kept reading that one marker is not a good indicator.

Also, I had several doctors tell me that they would be surprised if it was truly Tri-18 because often there are other anatomy (esp heart) concerns. So hopefully that info will ease your mind some too.

Thanks Guys! Of course I have been going crazy with internet research on this soft marker business and I am happy with what I am finding. I found this article that discusses, telling parents of the presence of a soft marker when there is only one. I really agree with this Doctor. I am for full disclosure when necessary, but not in these situations!

My pregnancy just went from easy (I don't look or feel pregnant to horribly fear-ridden). Not really loving scientific advancements today.

At my 22 week ultrasound they found several choriod plexus cysts on my son's brain. They took an extra long look at the rest of his anatomy and told us not to worry. We were scared to death!!!!! Sure enough, by my next ultrasound a month later, they were completely gone. He is now a healthy 15mo with no issues what so ever...

I know how you're feeling right now :hug99: He is going to be okay :)

The peri told us they will go away, but said that doesn't matter. He said the fact that they were there remains as a known soft marker!

Very glad to hear your son is healthy! :) !!!!!!!

I don't have any experience with a soft marker, but I'm thinking of you and hoping you receive good news on Austin at your next appt. :hug99:

We had baby BH with a CP cyst too!! It was at our 18 week or so scan...we were told it was a soft marker as well, but not other signs were present. They gave us an option to do an amnio- we turned it down. The cyst disapeared by 24 weeks and I have 2 wonderful 24 month olds!!

Our Baby B had CPCs as well. I did some research and in all of the studies I found, the babies that had CPCs but NO other markers were ALL healthy, normal babies. Every study, if you look at the actual data, shows that by themselves, CPCs are NOT an increased risk of trisomy 18.

My DS had a large CP cyst at our 20 week ultrasound and I was so freaked too. I was really scared to go to our 22 week u/s but I went and it was gone. My OB said as long as there aren't any other markers that we shouldn't be too concerned. Of course you are gonna worry but chances are everything is fine!

Thanks to everyone for your support and sharing.

My Ob called yesterday, to tell me they received my results from the level 2. The nurse told me over the phone and rather harshly they are sending me back to to the Peri for the follow-up u/s. The Peri told us as we left not to worry, and unless we had anymore questions we wouldn't see him again. Now I get this phone call yesterday. This is the second phone call I have gotten from my Ob that is lacking to say the least in bedside manner. The first was to tell me while I am at work about 2 months ago, they found blood in my urine and I must come in for a catheter there was no explanation, just get in here. I am not happy. My dh called the peri's office to discuss again what was going on and basically why does this seem to be a big deal when we were told it's not. Again we were told not to worry...but come on. The follow-up u/s is on 11/21- I hope it is a happy Thanksgiving.

I am thinking of calling my Ob. What do you all think? Let it go or tell her that I am upset how her office has handled sensitive information over the phone...
