M didn't nap today at the sitter's house so she was SUPER overtired during our bedtime routine. She decided she wanted me to read another story, but I already gave a warning that we were having one more. WOWZA did she throw a tantrum. During the whole thing I tried my best to ignore the thrashing, the screaming, the insanity of it all and calmly said "You can cry and then come have your milk." A (who normally doesn't care what M does) was stunned and actually tried consoling her ("Want your milk M?"- nope- poor elmo sippy was hurled across the room). A brushed her teeth while M writhed on the floor screaming "Library STORY!!!! I want a LIBRARY STORY!" I tucked A into bed and said night night and then dealt with M. I realized that she just really needed to get into bed and go to sleep, so I quickly brushed her teeth (its possible while she is screaming because her mouth was open!), picked her up and brought her into her bed. As soon as I laid her down she screamed for exactly 1 second and by the time I put her blanket on her she was out. The whole thing lasted maybe 15 minutes but wow can that kid scream. I felt so bad for her since it was clear that she was very uncomfortable, tired and upset. Poor punkin. Hopefully she naps at the sitter's house tomorrow.

Oh and of course it happens tonight when I'm totally sick and can barely talk or breathe and DH is working late.

I have dealt with tantrums for a while now. The best thing to do is just put her to bed. You knew she was overtired & knew that waould fix it. End of story. From my experience when I try to negotiate it just gets worse.

Yikes girl. I am so sorry you had to go through that especially being sick and with dh not around to help out. You seem to have the right outlook on it though. Let's face it; tantrums just suck but kids don't usually tantrum just for the sake of tantruming. They are usually tired, frustrated, or just unable to voice their needs. Okay, sometimes they cry because they just want what they want but overall, you just need to keep it all in perspective and figure out what is behind it so you don't find yourself getting angry or frustrated yourself. You handled that like a champ Leighann. I'm so proud of you!!! You must be exhausted though ;) Hope you get some good sleep tonight!

Ugh! We are still in the tantrum phase and it is amazing what they can do.
