Im posting this out of pure curiosity. :)

I´ve noticed my LOs generally use both hands to do things but I´ve recently noticed DS is using his left hand more to feed himself with a spoon. Im not concerned at all but it got me wondering when it becomes clear if they are left or right-handed.

Which hands are your LOs using and how old are they? (FYI mine are 19 months).

mine will use both hands but seem to prefer their right hands. my girls are 18 months old. this is a good question - i'm not sure when handedness (is that a word?) is determined...

I guessed at 'pick up toy age' (I already forget what age that is) that Nate would be left handed… and so far he still uses his left hand more often… but… I may end up wrong… his dad and uncle (DH brother) are both left handed… don’t have any idea if genetics has anything to do w/ it :pardon: I do remember reading (I think on here) about id’s and one being left handed and one being right more time then not… but I know with b/g (frat)twins that wouldn’t apply… just an interesting tid bit that may or may not be true…

shall be neet to see if i was right ... or wrong

I think I have a righty and a lefty. Eli seems to be left handed, and my Mom said the same thing. Mark seems to be right handed.

As soon as my girls started using crayons and drawing it was fairly easy to tell. I have two righties when it comes to coloring, but when it comes to sports, Allison is a rightie and Sarah usually prefers her left, but can use either. Last summer was when we discovered their hand preference for sports activities.

I guessed it more than a year ago, and it seems to really be evident now. my ds is a leftie, and mh dd is a rightie. they can eat with both, but prefer that certain hand. but more of the determining factor is just watching everything they do. they each do sign language and wave bye bye with their dominant hand. also, we got some of the magna doodle type boards, and my ds is so cute, draws w/left hand then holds that "pen" with his right so he can move the lever to clear the board with his left! he's certainly a leftie like me!

I'll be interested to see if I'm right when they do start more drawing etc.

Seems to me I've read that it can take 3-4 years for handedness to be determined. Nate uses his left hand for almost everything, while Jack uses his right. I'm very curious to see if this means they will end up being left- and right-handed.

Here's a kind of neat article I found about handedness, and it even talks about twins!

I guessed early on that DD1 would be a lefty. And she is. I'm not sure about the twins. Sam could turn left on me. But both are using the right hand more than anything.

Our school OTs would tell you that hand dominance should be determined around 5. Before that point, it's OK that they switch back and forth.

The OT who sees my kids thru EI told me hand dominance should not be seen until the ages 3-5 and they should be using both hands fairly equally before then, unless there is some one-sided weakness going on. She said if you see too much dominance in one hand before then, that is how they determine if there is something wrong related to muscle weakness.

Trent is still "undetermined". He switches off often for both gross and fine motor and really keeps me guessing. I think he's either going to have cross dominance (where some activities are right-handed and others are left) or he'll be ambidextrous.

Trevor has clearly been right-handed for a long time. I could tell when he was using utensils at 18 months. He'd use both sides but he was more likely to use his right. Same with throwing/kicking and crayon use; he'd switch but had more control with the right. Oh, and no issues with muscle weakness on the left. He's very athletic.

we've long suspected that Ian would be lefty and left seems dominant with drawing and using the Tag reader etc but sometimes he will use his right hand...Abby has been a righty almost exclusively since birth!

When my oldest was about 8 months I called that he was left handed and he is... The twins are almost 2 and I'm positive Jake is left, however I'm not 100% sure about Aly. I think she's right but she hasn't gotten the hang of holding a crayon yet so she tends to switch hands. My youngest Ethan is 10 months and I have NO idea!
