I'm 34w 2 days and expecting b/g twins. I've been leaking a small amount of what I thought was discharge for about 2 weeks. Late last week the L&D nurse ran 2 tests, a strip test, which came back positive and a AMNI SURE test which was a vaginal swab and it also came back positive for a leak. She was concerned and called my dr. on call. He came to do a Ffn Test ( aka fern test) which came back negative. They sent me home and said it was discharge. Previous to the discharge my blood pressure was high for me...137/86 and it usually runs around 111/56. All of a sudden, the bp went back down and has been up and down significantly ever since. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. My family is a little upset as the drs. keep saying I'm fine. They've tested for Pre-e and everything in between....but all is ok. My question is why would 2 of the 3 be positive and 1 be negative? Most drs stop after the amni sure test. <_<
Next thing I know, they've moved my u/s date up to this Thursday in somewhat of a rush. I'm anxious...wondering if they see a decreased level if they will do an emergency c-section or what.....Confused.

They will probably do a section if one baby's fluid is significantly low. It's going to depend on a few things though. I'm sorry you aren't getting any good answers. At least you will know something this Thursday if nothing else. I hope things go well for you.

  3. I know I don't belong here(at least not yet, until we see if baby b has a hb) but had to chime in and say, the ffn test is NOT a ferning test, it is a fetal fibronectin test, which tests to see if you are at risk to go into labor SOON. So if they based your *just discharge* on that, they are mistaken, call your ob and tell him what happened!!

ETA a link on fFn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_Fibronectin

I think I can understand why some tests can be positive but others negative. The Ffn test (in my laymans terms, not anything medical) checks to see if you are producing a chemical that your body will need to produce in order to go into labor. It has nothing to do with fluid and would have no idea you are potentially leaking if that makes sense. A negative Ffn is good and usually shows you are not going to go into labor within 2 weeks but if the fluid gets too low then they would have to induce or c-section whether your body is ready or not, does that make sense? What I don't understand is the changer from fluid to discharge? The test to confirm amniotic fluid is as easy as watching a piece of paper change colors. The good news is the fluid is always being replenished and apparently you are replenishing more than you are losing if this has been happening for a couple weeks. Good luck on Thurs, if you feel any change in discharge between now and then I would call your doc! Keep drinking and taking it easy (preferably laying on your left side!).

ETA: Sorry to repeat Shannon a little, I took longer to type :D . Shannon, you are more than welcome here!

I cant help you on the leak but I can help you on your bp issues, well i can pass along info to you :)

Have you done a 24 hour urine? How long ago did they run labs? PIH (pregnancy induced hypertention) and Pre-eclampsia can come on very quickly, enough so that many people being to have daily labs done or even labs every few hours if it becomes severe (been there-done that so I remember it still). If you develop a headache that wont go away with tylonel, visual problems, increased swelling, pain under your right breast, then you need to be checked out, these are all signs of pre-eclampsia. Check out www.preeclampsia.org There is a forum there and alot of good info just in case. Unfortnanatly a multiple pregnancy does put you at a higher risk for developing it. YOu best bet is to check your bp a few times a day and keep track of it. If it gets above 140/90 then call in or head to L&D. Lay on your left side as much as possible, this helps blood flow through the placenta and helps to keep your bp a little lower.

It is possible to have a slow leak for a while that is not overly dangerous and does not mean you will go in labor anytime soon. That could explain why 2 of the 3 tests came back positive. You do keep making amniotic fluid, so if it is a slow leak, you may be replacing it fast enough. Have you had recent ultrasounds to monitor the fluid levels around both babies? I think the main concern would be that one of the baby's doesn't have enough fluid. I don't think there is anything they can do other than induce you for low fluids if you have a slow leak. You could go on bedrest, but I think there is disagreement about whether that will prevent your water from completely breaking if it is going to break or not.

My baby B's water broke, and it was just a trickle for a while because Baby A was engaged and preventing too much from coming out. Since Baby B's water completely broke, however, I eventually (like within a few hours) experienced the gush of fluid after sitting and then standing, so I bet if your water was really broken, you would have had more than a trickle by now. Also, they induced me after my water broke because of an increased risk of infection. I don't know if there is the same risk of infection with only a leak.
