Lazy PTing mom meets girls who are ready to train

Potty training was going great over the summer. Meara was pretty much day trained and super excited to wear panties. And then I got lazy, and Ana wasn't into it, and it got cold, and they couldn't wear dresses all the time, etc etc etc. So now here we are two months away from their 3rd birthday fully in diapers again, which I'm not that concerned about because I'm lazy and diapers aren't a big deal to me. The problem? They are ready now. They are asking to wear big girl panties and they want to go to the potty.

While that sounds great, my DH just tore up our hall bathroom (their bathroom) and we are embarking on a months-long remodeling job. So their access to a bathroom (our master bathroom) is limited because there are tools and other dangerous things in between their play room/den and that bathroom. We put a gate up to keep them away from the dangerous stuff, but that also keeps them away from a bathroom. DH is firmly against keeping their little potties anywhere except a bathroom, so putting them in the den is out of the question (while I kind of agree, I'm not as grossed out as he is by it).

So what do I do? Do I discourage them and wait until the bathroom model is done 1-2 months from now? Do I just suck it up and start training them and expect there will be accidents because they will have to tell me they need to go to the bathroom and I will have to bring them there? Do I just bring them to the bathroom every 15-30 minutes? Do I press the issue with DH about no potties outside a bathroom?

If it was me, I'd press the issue with DH. We have our little potties in the playroom and it's really convenient and not gross at all. You may need to remind your DH that you'll be dumping the pee immediately, it's not like there will be an open toilet sitting in the middle of the family room.

Another vote for keeping potties outside of the bathroom. We lock up the bathrooms because the kids love to make a mess with water in the sink the minute our backs are turned. (Yeah, yeah, we could do something about that...along with the other 10 million things we need to pay attention to/discipline for. ) We dump them out as soon as they pee or poop anyway. Not gross at all.

Good luck! It will probably be easier than you think.

What they said...in our old house we had our potties in the living room because the only bathroom was upstairs!

I agree about keeping the potties somewhere else. Plus, we nearly always had to go to the bathroom with them anyway (either to help them wipe, or to dump the pee, or to read them books  ), so it's not like they were doing their business completely independently -- not for a few months, at least.

I agree about pushing DH to agree to using potties outside the bathroom. It's much less gross to have pee/poop in a potty than pee (maybe poop?) all over your floors because they didn't make it to the bathroom in time. :)

I'll second, 3rd and 4th the idea of keeping potties outside the bathroom.

While our potties are NOW inside the bathroom, at one point they were having so many accidents we had to keep a potty in the living room and one in the playroom, and we have a one story house! Also, ours LOVED to play in the sink, the tub, and yes, even the toilet (GROSS!) so until they were OUT of that phase, I too tended to lock the bathrooms and not give them access... meaning potties had to be somewhere else. :)

    Good Luck.

If the bathroom is not accessable to them, then the potties need to come out. I wouldn't waste another minute.. if they are ready.. take that cue!
