    Hi ladies,

I know I'm not supposed to sleep on my back because the weight of the babies and placenta, etc. can cut off some artery...but the last few nights, I've woken up to find myself sleeping on my back...and feeling a HUGE pressure in my chest. It seriously feels like I have a 200 pound brick sitting on top of me. Is this because I'm cutting off blood flow or is this heartburn (I've never had heartburn but websites describe it as pressure)?

I hope I'm not doing anything to harm my babies! I can't help that I do it in the middle of my sleep!

Ohhhh when you get heartburn, you will know it. It burns in your chest and sometimes up into your throat.

The vein the babies are laying on is the superior vena cava. i go to sleep on my side, but have recently gotten very uncomfortable and so i do end up on my back just to take the weight off my sides and hips.

As for the pressure on your chest....depending on hw far along you are, it could be the babies pushiing everythng upwards and constricting your lungs. i know my baby A is right up under my ribs now. Maybe try sleeping propped up a bit wih another pillow.

I wake up on my back alot too, and the pressure in your chest might be because the babies are pushing on stuff lol. I wake up on my tummy still too, ask me how that is possible being 27 weeks i dunnno lol

My doctor said not to worry about it, that sleeping on your back is not that big of a deal. I try to wedge body pillows on either side of me so that when I do roll over on my back I'm at least turned partially in one direction... maybe you can try that.

The pressure is probably from the babies. But no you won't hurt them waking up on your back. Your body is waking you up telling you it's time to move, LONG before any damage is done. It's not recommended to sleep for hours and hours and hours on your back is what they mean, and again your body will tell you when it's been too long as you'll likely become dizzy, maybe nauseated, and just a general feeling of "ugh".
