I've been dealing with a short cervix for a couple of months now and I've been on bedrest because of it. I'm 26 weeks along and for the last couple of weeks my peri has measured my cervix at between 0.8-1.0 cm with "lots of funneling." Very short. At one point I asked him if, with bedrest or whatever else, my cervix could improve and get longer. He said, 'no, this problem only gets worse.' Yesterday I went in for another appointment. My peri was out of town so I saw another high risk OB in the clinic. She measured my cervix at 2cm! And, she said there was very little funneling. Of course I was happy about this, but it's also left me completely confused. Has my cervix really improved or are two different doctors getting two different measurements?

A couple of weeks ago when I had my last growth scan, the ultrasound tech measured my cervix at 1.9cm. Then, just two hours later my peri measured 0.8-1cm. Granted, one was abdominal and one was vaginal, but that is a huge difference! And last week when I went into the hospital to have my steriod shot, the on call OB who checked me (manually) said my cervix felt thicker and longer than what my peri had described to her.

What is going on here? All these other providers are getting better measurements and giving me more encouraging news than my peri. I know he is VERY conservative in his measurements, but these are still huge differences. I've never liked my peri. He is all gloom and doom and always gives me a bleak outlook. I'd like to dump him and go back to my regular OB (who also does high risk), but he (the peri) is the one that all the other doctors defer to.

Can anyone help me make sense of all this?

Wow, you really have been getting lots of different measurements. I know that with bedrest, your cervix can get longer. Sounds like it is working for you. :good:

Hi, my cervix was "dynamic". It was different every time they measured it. It was anywhere from 6 mm-1.5 cm at the end. Sometimes the top would be funneling and other times it would be closed. I don't know how to explain it, but it's the same experience I had. I was able to make it to 36 weeks. Hang in there!

    Hi, my cervix was "dynamic".

I heard that term too. Mine would change as well, shorten, then lengthen, funneling, then not. I was on bedrest too. I think it could be a mixture of different measurements/different docs and it being dynamic.

Abdominal u/s for cervix measurements are not that accurate from what my peri told me.

It does sound like the bedrest is doing some good, keep at it!

Thanks for the responses. I left a message for my doctor today asking what was up with these different measurements. I will also be seeing him at my appointment on Friday. I'm really curious to hear his explanation.

I forgot to mention that I have read a lot of posts here about how somebody's cervix lengthened with bedrest, so I know this a possibility. Also, my regular OB did mention I could have a dynamic cervix, but my peri kind of dismissed that notion, arguing that the cervix length only goes down, not up and down. ????

i was also told i had a dynamic cervix - it would change lengths & sometimes would be funneling & sometimes not. i was also under the impression that abdominal u/s aren't very accurate for cervical length, so that could at least explain some of the differences.

i'm curious to hear what your peri's explanation is. KUP!

My doc told me the cervix is like an accordian and bedrest or not can change from minute to minute.
