So last night was spent in ER. My wife is 21 weeks pregnant and she came down with a bad respitory infection last weekend. The doc started her on amoxicillan to kill the bacteria and get rid of the pain in her throat and benilyn to suppress the cough.

Well the pain in the throat went away, unfortunately the cough got worse - so bad that her ribs were hurting and we had to rush to the ER last night. Being in Canada and in public healthcare system it tooks 5 hours to see a doctor and the meantime my poor wife was crying of pain in her ribs. The final conclusion was to discontinue benilyn and instead to add tylenol 3 as it is a cough suppressant and pain reliever. I really hope my wife feels better.

anyone else out there who has had a bad respitory infection while pregnant with twins - would love to share your story.

I just went through the same thing. I was coughing so hard last monday and my ribs hurt so badly that I couldn't catch my breath. My heart rate was through the roof. I couldn't even lay down because my sides hurt, so I ended up in the ER. The doctor gave me an atibiotic and hycotuss but unfortunatly I can not take narcotics at all so I just stuck with plain old robitussin. It went from my chest to my head and back to my chest. I am just now starting to feel normal again after a solid week. I just rested alot!!! I took tylenol for the aches and robitussin for the cough, I didn't end up taking the antibiotic because my doctor was convinced it was just a virus. All better now, but man pregnant with twins and sick, not fun at all!!

With my last pregnancy I had bronchitis and the whooping cough, and I'll tell you what--it was truly the most miserable I have ever been in my entire life. That cough just ripped me apart. I would cough so hard I would throw up and pee my pants at the same time. I feel for your wife! I remember her posting that she had been given some antibiotics, and I replied that I hoped she would feel better soon...I had no idea her cough was so severe. Even after 3 rounds of antibiotics for me, the cough lingered for near 2 months. I sincerely hope that is not the case for her. Please keep us updated on how she's doing, and tell her to get well soon!

thanks for the response - she is slightly better now - the pain is a little under control and so is her cough.

we are seeing her doc on thursday and lets see what else he has to say.

One thing that majorally helped me after a cough lingered for about 2 months... prevacid. My Doc. figured that after so much time it was probably related to acid reflux, and not the original cold/infection. You might want to store this info away for weeks down the road. I was SO thankful to be relieved of it, and it worked right away.

well the cough seems to be worst at night - is that true for everyone.

also her appetite has decreased because of the cough.

so far after the ER visit one good thing is that the pain in the rib has reduced - partly because of the codine and also because of coughing less.

i hope she has a good night as she has had trouble sleeping the last few nights

Yikes! How awful!!! Being pregnant can be uncomfortable enough without the added stress of a bad infection/cough. It sounds like she has a great support system at home though, thanks to you. And maybe the codeine will help her sleep.

I had a terrible cough when my water broke. I joked that my water broke because I had been coughing so hard. I am glad she is in the right place and under supervision. As for the cough being worse at night, I would ask about the acid reflux as a previous post said. Aside from having a bacterial infection in her lungs, in general if a cough gets worse at night I have been told that it is because the contents of the stomach come up and itrritate the esophagus. And we all know acid reflux gets worse with being pg. I hope she feels better soon. [IMG]

well last night was slightly better - her cough was mellow and the pain in her ribs were less.

she was able to have her glass of milk this morning and took another dose of tylenol 3. the lesser she coughs, the better her ribs feel.

i am just praying she gets well soon.
