They probably should just ban these cribs at this point.

I can see it now... all those cribs set out at the trash.

Stores are going to be making some great sales this season on new cribs.

Drop down side cribs were never something I liked. We did not have any like that. The ones that I did see or have experience with at other peoples homes were often pains in the butt. They either did not go down easily, did not go up easily or went down to fast.

 

When I was pg back in 2007 they had a recall (can't remember the brand) and that is the main reason I did not purchase a drop down crib.

 

I have two cribs, one relatively new in the last 5 years and the other hand-me-down, both of them are drop down. But I have no clue what their brands are. I've never used the drop down feature, and I'm constantly parinoid that they aren't locked in place properly. I do hope they get rid of this feature. Honestly, even with the crib side dropped down it's just as much of a lift to get the baby in the crib as with it up.

I'm just wondering by 'recall' what exactly will that mean?? Will replacement cribs be given out or is this just a CYA by the feds...

 

I totally understand the recall but am really sad that they are trying to get rid of the drop down side. I'm not sure what we'll do! I'm just barely 4'11 and can't reach over the cribs when the side is stationanry. We have 3 of these so, I'll be on the look out tomorrow.

 

I was going to say that the pp's must not be short. I'm 5' and without the drop side I would have needed a step stool by the cribs- thats safe, huh? I have two that I'm trying to sell so I hope ours aren't on the recall list. We had no problems with our cribs and they are built very solid.

 

I really liked the drop-down feature on my cribs -- I thought it made it easier to get my gigantic babies in and out. How sad about the safety issue, though. Makes me glad we're done with cribs for good!

 

I have never been a fan of the drop down sides. I'm only 5'2" and never had an issue getting dd in/out of her crib (a convertible crib). Ironically, when I was looking for cribs for the twins I was looking for a more traditional look, ie the look of a drop down, but without the actual drop down side, I had the hardest time finding one! At the boutique I finally purchased them from (one of the only places that had what I was looking for) I explained what I was looking for and the sales gal told me (3 months ago) that manufacturers were going to stop making the drop sides...maybe she knew something way back then.

I honestly can't remember what brand one of my cribs is. One is Graco and the other doesn't say. I have a model number so I guess I'll be looking for that.

 

This Article says they will be sending a free device to convert the side to a fixed side instead of being drop-style. Just FYI.

 

I don't know what to do. I have drop down cribs but they are not the recalled ones. Mine are Graco. I'm nervous now but there's no way I would afford to run out and buy new cribs.

Do you think it would be safe if I had my FIL hook something up so that it keeps the drop down from now working? Or do you think since my brand was not recalled I'm ok? Opinions are very welcomed.

 

I'm wondering the same thing as the poster above me. I just bought a brand new Graco Lauren 4-in-1 convertible crib that has the drop side rail. It seems sturdy and I know the drop side is on properly but now I'm worried but I cannot imagine trying to send it back. I live on an island in Alaska and in order for me to get it here I to order it online from Walmart and have it shipped to a barge in Seattle and then pay the extra barge shipping fee so yeah big PITA! I wish they would just send everyone that has a drop side crib the kit to make it fixed!

 

For those of you with the Graco cribs, they were manufactured by Lajobi and are not part of the recall. I contacted Graco to ask if they had a kit to make the drop side a fixed side and they told no because they are not part of the recall. They suggested I contact Lajobi to see if they had a kit but their phone lines have been busy. If anybody else is interested in calling this is the # (888)266-2848 I will let you know what I find out.

 

I foresee crib makers moving to the type of crib with a swing door on the front, commonly used by little people with dwarfism, who are parents. It allows removal of a baby without putting the side down, and w/o needing a stool to reach in over the top.

 

I just called Graco too and was also told that they are made by Lajobi. I was given this number though 877-440-2224 for Lajobi. I did get through to their customer service (not very helpful at all) Bottom line is they have had no calls about their cribs, it's not part of the recall and they do not have a kit to make it not a drop down. She was not very helpful and kind of made me feel like I was even nuts for calling to ask.

ALSO, I went to babies R us yesterday and they are still selling the Lauren but get this...It's NOT a drop down anymore. I got mine at walmart and walmart is still selling the dropdown one. I'm extremely annoyed, upset and don't know what to do. UGH! You would think they would take the steps to provide a kit before anything does happen.

 

I know, I'm really irritated with them as well and even though I did not get through to Lajobi, Graco acted the same way (like I was nuts). I don't think it is so crazy to expect a company to provide a simple kit to prevent an injury when a product they make has something that has been deemed dangerous. I guess they'd rather wait until a child is injured or killed before doing that. :grr:
