Since the start of this pregnancy I have had little to no appetite. Now that I am sick and on antibiotics for a throat, sinus infection and bronchitis, I have even less of one. I have to force myself to eat something, and after a few bites I cant eat anymore. I am starting to get worried about it. Should I be? Anyone else have a severe lack of Appetite?

I have a lack of appetite too. I just force down what I can. I end up eating a million times a day but just little healthy snacks. I am also sick right now too so that is part of the problem I think!

yes! all through the second trimester i could hardly eat a thing. i started to drink Ensure with Protein to supplement the lack of actual nutrition I was getting. I'm now in the 3rd trimester and while I am HUGE and don't want to eat because I know it will only bring discomfort I can't get it out of my mind....all I think about is what I am going to gobble down next.

I wouldn't worry to much about it, your appetite should come back, if not protein shakes are an excellent source of nutrition and if you are still gaining and the babies are getting nice and big don't worry! :)

Oh boy, I have been, and still am in those shoes. I did loose my appetite while I was dealing with the worst of my bronchitis and on antibiotics. (Why the heck do doctors always think you smoke if you get bronchitis? Jeeze crap happens!)

Check with your OB first and ask if you might need a supplement shake till you feel better.
Many people on these boards seem to use supplement shakes daily. Thankfully they aren't something I need!*yuck*
I just kept trying to find something appetizing, simple to eat, and ate several small meals for a while. Otherwise I'd get coughing really hard then loose my stomach. Then I really had to force myself to eat after that.

My appetite came back a few weeks ago in full force after almost 3 weeks of amoxicillan. I had to stop it before I recovered since I developed an allergy to it. I'm still dealing with the racking cough and sinus drainage at times. Seems like I'm stuck with it the entire pregnancy. :( At least my throat doesn't hurt anymore. :)
So far I'm able to keep food down fine, but breathing is another issue.

actually the shakes are rather tastey! :) and it sure beats nothing at all.
i often find that when my stomach is really upset drinking the shakes calms it down.

but yes, small meals all throughout the day are excellent choices as well.

as for the breathing, that will come and go with the twins movement, just try to take it easy!

I feel the same way. I cant eat anything without feeling over full/bloated or getting nausea from it. I've been making myself eat b/c I know I've lost a few pounds. I was given the outline for a twin GD controlled diet last week and I was shocked at the amount of food they want me to eat. I'm supposed to eat 75g of carbs per meal that is equal to 5 slices of bread! Plus another 15-20g for 3 snacks a day(and I still have to eat protein, dairy..etc). I only had to eat 60g with my DD and two 15g snacks. I didn't realize how much more food twins need until I actually saw it in writting. I've read Dr. Luke's book and I am thinking about adding a powder whey protein to my diet or a sugar free protein shake. I find the best time to sneak food in is at night when I feel my best. I'm just hoping this will pass so I can pack on a few pounds. :)

 I am sorry that you are under the weather, that never helps, especially when you are pregnant with twins. I agree that I would try to eat small meals throughout the day and see if that helps. Best of luck to you!!

When everyone found out I was carrying twins, the jokes about eating for 3 started, but to tell the truth I have never ate so little in my life. :p

HAHA that was the first thing that they asked me today, are you a smoker? Never smoked a day in my life, I am a chronic Asthmatic. They do automatically assume that you are a smoker when you have Bronchitis

Yeah but protein shakes are typically full of sugar unless you're drinking the sugar free kind (which are then full of artificial sweeteners). I think they're ok occassionally but I wouldn't make a habit of drinking those. I was the queen of splenda until I got pregnant and now I try to really limit my intake of the stuff.

I have trouble eating but I havent gone the drink route yet, but if you do, there are quite a few posts where people talk about protein powders that they buy from the health store and mix with fruit smoothies, etc.

    I hope feel better soon.

glucerna, for diabetics makes one and so does boost carb control (that's what it's called i believe).

i was diagnosed GD so I have to watch the sugar intake myself. artificial sweetners such as splenda are OK, it's the others that are a problem.

I'm sorry that you are feeling so bad... it does get better though. I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. As long as you can keep your prenatal vitamin and liquids down (do NOT want to get dehydrated), I was told that the babies will grow final "stealing" from mom during the first trimester. My doctor was more concerned if I could eat by second trimester. I lost some weight in the first trimester, but with the help of Zofran started eating fine later - at my 29 week appointment last week I had gained 23 pounds.

    Oh yeah don't get dehydrated!

Something else I was told my OB was to keep drinking LOTS of water. It does help to keep the mucus thin and helps keep my sinus's easier to clear. I still drink at least a gallon of water each day.

I just fill up a large gallon pitcher each day and have a mug with a lid. Seems it's easier to drink with a straw also instead.
