I made a trip to L&D last night due to slipping and falling on the ice leaving work.
It took a while to find baby a, he just wouldn't cooperate and the dopplar was acting up too. On top of 45 minutes of pure **** I was contracting every 4-5 minutes. My doc ordered a fFN and a shot of Breathine. The breathine worked, for a little while. After the fFN test I started contracting again. The doctor ordered another shot of breathine and she wanted me checked. I was on the verge of being admitted, but luckily the second shot worked and the fFN came back negative, so I'm at home.

When the nurse checked me she said that I was 50 % effaced and about 1 cm dialated. I'm a little freaked out about that. Has anyone been 50% effaced around 28 weeks and lasted another 6-8 weeks? My doc really wants me to get to at least 34 weeks, is that even possible now?

I am not really sure about the effacement, but the dr probably wouldn't have released you if she thought it was an imminent danger. You only have to make it 5 weeks, take it easy and drink a lot. I would also ask your dr if you have concerns, they can ease your mind. I hope it all works out.

I was in L&D at 29 weeks with contractions every 4-5 minutes. I was still closed up but was given a shot of Terbutaline and the contractions stopped. I was sent home on bed rest and with Terbutaline to take every 3-4 hours. I was back in L&D at 31 weeks with contractions every 4-5 minutes, this time I was a finger tip dialated given another shot and sent home (ended up right back two hours later with more contractions). They asked if I was fine to go home, I said sure and haven't had too many issues this week. They didn't say anything to me about effacement, but they still believe I'll make it to the end.

    Good luck!!!

Oh no. I am sorry you fell and are going through so much. Are you on bedrest? I will keep you and your babies in my prayers, Lisa

    Thanks everyone.

LIsa I'm not on bedrest as of yet. I was released with instructions to take it easy until I follow up with my doctor. I'll be calling them as soon as I wake up in the morning and hopefully get in without a problem.

Bran I'm glad to hear they think you'll make it to the end.

I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced at 28 weeks. Went on bedrest with brethine pills every four hours and made it to the scheduled C-section at 37 weeks 2 days. You can do it! Take it easy, drink tons of water and take care of yourself! Let others help with chores, meals etc. so you can be off your feet as much as possible!
    Good luck :D

Jenn- were you able to call this morning? If you can do it, bed rest might be a good idea. It was a tough transition for me, but my job was very understanding, but I had prepared them at 21 weeks to plan on me leaving around 28 weeks..sure enough, 29 weeks I was done. Have you had any other contractions since leaving the hospital?

Sounds like us early contractors will be ok, based on what the others are saying, and the doctors. Erineliza's story is comforting.

    Good luck!

Yikes! I have no clue and no advice, but to say I wish you the best and I hope they stay put for another couple of months!

Bran No one is in the office on sundays. They have someone answering phones on saturday, but no docs. That seems pointless to me. The person I talked to was the one that said they'd want to see me before returning to work. If I have to do bedrest then we'll find a way to make it work. My mom will be working double duty when DH is at work. My brother just had back surgery, and she's caring for him. Hopefully if I go on bed rest workmans comp will cover me. I really believe the fall caused most if not all of my problems. I've had a few ( maybe 4-6) contractions in the last two days, but nothing like what I had at the hospital. Usually if I change positions or go to the bathroom they go away almost immediately.

Thanks Rachael. I know my doctors will be happy if I can get another 6-8 weeks in.

Erineliza- Thank you for sharing your story. It makes me feel more confident that things will still turn out just fine.

At my last appointment, at 26 weeks, my cervix was still a little over 3cm. I know that is had shortened a little since 23 weeks, maybe .4 cm and the doctor was still really happy with my number. I wonder what 50 % effaced equals in cm? Anyone know?

Nope, no mention of bedrest. I'm suppose to follow up with my OB tomorrow. Hopefully I can get in early.

I would not pay any attention to the nurses exam ... I think that effacement can be a bit subjective on an internal exam.
In my experience, I went to L/D with back pain/abdominal cramping. On the internal exam, the nurse said I was 50% effaced, and a fingertip dilated. I had a transvaginal u/s, to check the lenght of my cervix, and everything was FINE .. no shortening, no funneling, nothing.

Try to relax, and take good care of yourself.

Dianna Thank you Thank you Thank you! All the ladies that have posted have been wonderful, but your experience has lifted the weight of my chest.
I've been hoping that the nurse could have been wrong, and now I know that she could have been. Hopefully the doctor can ease my fears 100% tomorrow.

I went in on Friday with contractions every two minutes, given tribulaine and two IV bags of fluid and sent home after 5 hours of nothing working, I am finger tip dialated with a long thick cervix. I am still freaking out a bit I called the dr and nurse just said for me to keep my appt Thursday and call if anything changed.

I'm back from the doctors office. I am definitely 50% effaced and 1cm dialated and my cervix is very soft.
The doctor has put me on bedrest and Brethine every 4-6 hours. He told me to keep my appointment on friday and that he'd start seeing me every week until the end. Hopefully they can stay put until 34 weeks, I'd love to get to 36 but will be happy with 34.
Hopefully nothing else unexpected will happen for the rest of this pregnancy.

Thank you everyone for all the support. I don't think I would have stayed sane the past two day.

Very similar to what we're going through over here. Take it easy and take bed rest serious! Hope you're doing well.
