My little man has not pooped on his own for 3 days, I have "helped" him go...but not on his own. He is grunting and kicking his legs like crazy, but has not gone yet. My mother in law wants me to try karo syrup in his bottle...any experience with this?? Has it helped your little ones?? Any other tricks of the trade??

I know you can try prune juice, but he is only 6 weeks old today, so I think that may be too early for juice.

    TIA...

How are you feeding him? If you breastfeed, he can go up to a good week without pooping.

I am giving all but two bottles of EBM, and two bottles of Gentlease formula!! Can he go a week even if that isn't his norm?? I know at some point their patterns change, when does that happen??

We put Karo syrup in the bottle and it worked really well. I would call your ped and ask him if it is ok to add to the bottle. I know we used it, but just don't remember how young they were when we did.

My exclusively breastfed son switched his pattern at about a month old. He'd poop every 3-4 days... instead of 5 times a day! :shok: Look for signs of discomfort. IF he poops hard balls, he is constipated. IF he is upset while pooping, then more than like he is constipated. He might just have some gas as babies tend to have a lot of that. Good luck!

eta: Grunting is a good sign of gas.

Is he struggling/straining to go? Does it seem hard? If not, I wouldn't do anything.

Karo syrup has been known to cause botulism in infants.

    Infant constipation.

I used karo with my older dd starting at 3 months old. I tried it with my baby girl and it didn't help, we are using some prune juice and it's sorta helping, every few days we have to use a glycerin suppository to help her go tho. She has screaming sessions when she can't go, and once we use the supp and she goes she's all coo's and giggles again.

My dr office recommended the karo syrup as well :)

We did the dark Kayro syrup for Aurora. The pedi was adament that it be dark, so that must make a difference. It worked wonders and it helped get her to eat more (she was a little bird with her eating habits). I would basically squeeze in enough to coat the bottom of the bottle and then do formula. There's an exact measurement, but I forgot what it is. We have the glycerin suppositories, but have not had to use them yet. I hear they work wonders too though.

    Good luck!

if your LO is in pain then he is constipated. otherwise, my ped said it was normal for them to go up to a week without pooping when they are that age. my girls sometimes went 3 days without going but were never in any pain.

My little girl (a/k/a Miss rabbit pellets) has had constipation problems since day one. I specifically remember when she was about two months old it had been almost an entire week since she had a b/m (she was bottle fed) and she was miserable. My MIL suggested I try two teaspoons of karo syrup mixed with about 2 oz. of warm water....about 20 minutes after she gulped it down Mt. St. Ava erupted. :) So my experience was that yes, karo syrup does work.

She is now 22 months and still has issues. I have to put benefiber in her beverages, avoid bananas, cheese, etc. Two weeks ago our ped put her on Lactulose, which is a non-habit forming stool softener which works as an acidifier in the colon--drawing extra water from the body in to the bowels. It has worked WONDERS. The funny thing is, it looks (and tastes) exactly like dark karo syrup....hmm?

Good luck--plugged up babies are no fun!

I used karo with Avery she was constipated when she was a newborn around one month. We used white karo and we used 1/4 teaspoon in each bottle. I was told to make sure and use it consistantly in every bottle for several days before increasing or doing with out because she went. I think the bottle size was around 3-4 oz. It help her and i think she finally got her in track with her formula is why we are not having a problem now

DarciH my 2.5 yr old dd is on benefiber in all her beverages too to help her go, we still have to use a suppository for her but it's much rarer. :)

My kids pediatrician said to use karo syrup for constipation i put 1 tsp with 1 oz of water, the first time he had it he was 5 mo old i am not sure of the age of when who can start but the pedi said to use it so i did, For KARO SYRUP to work it takes abt 12 - 24 hours. it works well with my kids, whenever i introduce new food to them which i think might constipate them i give them 1 ounce if they don't go poop for 2 days.

I hope it helped, Good luck :)

another think i forgot to add was that the doc also said to dip the q-tip in oil and kinda rub the oil in the anus area, not too deep just a tiny bit like we check temp with thermometer and she said this should help, i was too scared for this so i choose the karo syrup, you can try that if you like :)

My pedi's handout on constipation does recommend the dark karo syrup for babies under a certain age (3 months I think?) and juice if older than that, but I'd call your pedi to make sure you get the correct amount, etc., for your LO's age.

We used 1/2 ounce of pear juice to a 1/2 ounce of water. Worked like a charm for us. GL!
