How old are they? Perhaps they're not ready. Some kids don't like rice. Have you tried something like sweet potatoes?

eta: Some babies at 4 months are just not ready for solids. I personally held off as long as I could. It was a messy time! Good luck!

I am inclined to think they aren't ready, too. We didn't start solids until 6 months - our guys would eat it, but as far as digestion, it put them in a tailspin when we tried at 4 months. So we stopped and waited until later.

You could try something else other than the rice cereal - carrots, for example. That was the first thing we did other than the cereal.

We started our guys on rice just after 5 months and they just weren't into it. They were fussy, refused the spoon. So we dropped it and tried again just before 6 months and they loved it! No looking back. If they're not taking it I'd just wait a few more weeks. It's all just for practice at the beginning anyway, so you want to make it a fun positive experience for them :)

I started around 6 months and none of my kids were really ready until closer to 7. I would try one day, if I didn't have any luck I would wait a day or two and try again. They all HATED rice cereal. I started with veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, etc). Could be they aren't ready or they don't like rice. Have you tried anything else?

It's really not worth the frustration when they aren't ready. I know it is an exciting milestone, but it'll happen!

We started at 4 months with the rice cereal. They didn't like it. We just tried every other day - just to get them used to it. Then we got the okay for oatmeal, and that was better. It's mainly for them to get used to it - not for nutritional value at that age. So, don't worry. Just have fun with it and try it when you can.

I just started solids with my girls, they are 4 1/2 months. We originally started with rice cereal but they really weren't eating it. So after a few days on the rice and I knew there wasn't any kind of allergies, I started adding in vegetables and fruits. Once I started adding purees into the rice cereal they caught on much quicker and were a lot better at eating, I think they just really didn't care for the plain rice cereal. We've only been on solids for a few weeks and they are awesome eaters, maybe try starting with some vegetable purees that are a little more appealing to the taste buds. Have fun, it's an exciting time.

We started at 4 months, and my kids were not into it until closer to 7. Looking back, I wish I'd just held off, but I know it's exciting to start. I'd just try once a day and keep expectations low. They don't need solids, and they will pick them up when they are ready. There is nothing I found to make that tongue thrust go away before they are ready. We tried different foods--fruits--and barely anything got I'm until they were ready.

What PP's said if they are not ready. However, you could also try pureed avocado or pear as first foods which are highly digestible. Oatmeal also. There are others. Or, mix stuff into the rice cereal. Although rice is not required, it is a good source of iron. We started rice at 5.5 mos about 3 times a week. All for practice. We were not really putting any solids down until 6.5/7 mos.
