just sitting on the potty to get used to it?

My boys are nearly 32 months old. They are getting closer to PT, but are not quite ready yet, IMO. I want to wait until we are closer to 3 years old because I want this to be quick and (hopefully!) easy - not a bit, drawn out process with tons of accidents.

Anyway, I was talking with some friends at work today, and they were suggesting we should at least be putting the boys on the potty once a day, just to sit there and get used to it. Like, make it a routine at bathtime just to sit up there. If something comes out, great, but no pressuring them. One woman was suggesting it was important so that when they ARE ready to PT in a few months, they will already be familiar with sitting on the toilet and not scared of it.

Is this necessary - or at least a good idea? We do talk about going on the potty, and they watch us go all the time, so it's not like they have no idea what it is. I was afraid if we start putting them on it and then put their diaper back on, it might just be confusing them.

    What do you ladies think??

We don't do that. They both watch us go and Sofia potty trained herself almost 2 weeks ago. Ryan has no interest, he knows what the deal is but doesn't want any part of it. So IMO it's not necessary to sit them every day.

We never did that either. When we bought them we did place them in the bathroom, ocassionally they sat on them with their clothes on.

I think letting them sit on the potty is a good idea. You still can't control whether they go or not, but it will help at least some parts of it become familiar. My girls have never seemed confused by having their diaper put back on after sitting on (or peeing/pooping in) the potty.

This is also how our daycare does it. All the kids get put on the potty at specific times during the day (plus whenever they say they need to go). I think it might help for them to know when potty time is, so that they can learn what it feels like to hold it and then let go, without the pressure of actually having to tell someone when they need to go.

But we are doing the "long and slow" PT approach. Someone who has done, and liked, the "naked butt for a week" approach might have a different opinion. :)

We had one and set it in the bathroom with the intention of building into our nighttime/bath routine. But they really resisited and DID NOT want to sit on it. So I didn't push it. BUT, when they were both ready, they both did it and were potty trained within days. So I was glad I had at least made it available!
