Well, our supposed fraternal twins are actually identical according to their DNA! We have spent the past 16 months believing they were fraternal. I am so happy to know for sure now. Just wanted to share. :D

Congrats! It must be nice to know. Everyone is always telling me that my girls are identical but we have always believed they were frats (according to their dr). This makes me want to get them tested! Where did you test through and if you don't mind how much $ was it? Thanks!

We did our testing through www.proactivegenetics.com. They are advertised here on TS, and quite a few people on here have used them. It was $170 total with shipping, and the whole process took just under a month. We were told that they were fraternal in the hospital because they were in separate sacs and had separate placentas. But, after reading lots of posts on here, I learned that it doesn't always mean they are fraternal. They have always looked alike, so we finally decided we wanted to know for sure. Definitely worth it to have a concrete answer. You will have to let us know if you decide to do it!

Congrats on the findings - they sure look ID to me!! Same thing here with my girls, different sacs, 2 placentas and we don't know if they are id or frat, one of these days we'll get them tested. . .

Also just wanted to say that I love their outfits, I think I just bought the girls the same shorts at Target, but it hasn't been warm enough to put them in shorts yet - soon!!!

I have to say, when I looked at their picture, I thought "Well of course they are!" Which is pretty much what my BF said to me when I called to tell her our test came back ID. :)

When you do this testing with the company you used, what exactly do you need to send in to them? My boys look quite a bit alike but their heads are shaped different. I'm guessing fraternal because of that. Do all identical twins look so much alike that you can't tell them apart? How do you tell them apart?

The company sends you a collection kit which is basically little sponges on sticks. You swab the inside of the mouth and transfer the saliva which contains some cheek cells onto a special paper. It couldn't be easier.

My identical boys look very different to me and DH but some other people struggle to tell them apart. It's because their heads are different in shape (which is actually quite common). We did the test at 15 months when I finally convinced DH that they look enough alike to test. He thought I was nuts because he was also under the impression that identicals look exactly alike and ours sure don't... at least, not to us ;) Parents are the worst judges of zygosity based upon appearance because we see the most subtle of differences while everyone else sees all of the similarities.

  22. hi there

i was reading this post and my friend has twin boys who will be 3 on thursday they have been beleaved (by some most people argued they were identical) but we thought they were fraternal they were just tested last month and the test came back they are 99.999999% identical they too have different head shapes and one how a cow lick in the front off his head i thought it amazing about the head shape but apparently is just some thing to do with the way they grow in the womb just because there DNA is identical doesnt always mean there appearance will be

Head shape is not a good thing to go one. Head shape is affected by their position in the womb and how they were delivered. I'm guessing your sons are idential too.
