hi! i found out yesterday at my 6 week appt. that im carrying twins. however, one sac was measuring 6 weeks and 1 day and had a good heartbeat, and the other measured only 5 weeks 2 days. no hb in that one. she thought she may have seen a yolk sac and a fetal pole, but wasnt sure. she gave us a 50/50 that baby #2 would make it. does this seem like a huge difference? has anyone had this happen and had a good outcome? thanks!

Good luck! It is very possible that they are just a week apart. Five weeks may be too early to see the 2nd heartbeat. :hug99: I know it's going to be tough waiting for your next ultrasound!

Congrats on the twins! I know how you feel on the sac sizes...When we first found out at the u/s...I was told Baby B's sac was measuring 2 weeks behind Baby A's sac. I think I was further along than you. At the time, I didn't know the stats on B, but he had a great heart rate and was the appropriate size-it was the sac that was too small. They basically told me there if I started to bleed, I was probably m/c. Well-eventually the sac caught up and it doesn't become, or isn't, an issue any longer. But I think I was at least 7 weeks for that u/s-making B measuring at 5 weeks. So I also think it's too early to see the h/b. Good luck!

At 6 weeks, I was told flat out that Baby B wasn't going to make it.

    That night I started bleeding.

The next day, I went in to see whether the tech was right and I was losing him, and Baby B was just fine, little heart beating away.

    Now we're almost 26 weeks!!!

We were in a similliar situation as you. We went in at 6 weeks and found out we were having twins, but they were both measuring 4 weeks. They told us to prepare to miscarry - but then realized that I wasn't a FULL six weeks and they weren't as concerned, but were still nervous. We went back a week later for an ultrasound and they were both right on target with heartbeats and fetal pole. My friend is a radiologist and he said you always have to get fetuses the benefit of the doubt and they catch up quickly. My doctor said you always give and take 6 days. You can check out our blog at mnmspiveyplustwins.blogspot.com and at the bottom you can see our first ultrasound pic and the next one a week later and see the difference in how big they grew! Hope all goes well and keep us updated!

I vividly remember how nervous I was when at 5 1/2 weeks we saw one heartbeat and not the other. But my RE said that's not unusual, and by the following week they were both just great! I hope you get good news soon. When is your next u/s?

hard to say... I had a m/c scare with this one at 5 weeks...they found just a sac, nothing else. The tech said there was no point in doing another u/s until I was 7 weeks, since not all babies will show a hb even at six weeks.... So maybe in another week that second little one will be beating.... I think some ob/gyns dislike giving u/s before 8 weeks for this very reason. I think they figure if the mom never knows then she won't feel upset about it. Not sure how I feel about that issue, but sometimes depending on where you go and what your circumstances are you don't have much of a choice regarding early u/s. Hope you get good news next appt!

I found out at about 5 weeks that mine were twins, but they warned me the measurements were smaller than they should be. I had a bleeding episode the next week, so I thought in my mind that I had a m/c, but the ultrasound showed two babies with heartbeats, but again with small measurements. Then at the 8 week ultrasound everything started to get better and their numbers started to be more appropriate. So, just know that early small measurements do not indicate necessarily a m/c.

It's definitely a "wait and see" situation which is always the worst. Our doc was pretty confident that one of our twins was not going to make it. It was measuring really small and the sac did not seem to be growing- but the baby was growing. They were worried he would run out of fluid. But, now it's week 35 and I have both babies. They are both doing well and the babies sac did end up growing. The docs just don't know a lot of this stuff...it's truly mother nature at work and out of all our hands.

I went in for my first u/s at 6-7 weeks. I was told the sac was too small for a baby and that even though it was twins, I would lose baby b, the Dr called it vanishing twin. I went to a new OB at 9 weeks before moving to a Peri at 14 weeks due to other problems. I am now 34w6d pregnant with boy/girl twins who are just fine! Keep your head up. Good luck! You will be in my thoughts and prayers to make this time a little less stressful for you!

I had the exact situation. Well, not exact, mine were actually measuring a full week difference and did that for a while. My doctor never gave me a 50/50 outcome or any statistic. We just went with the flow, albeit worried, and it all turned out fine. At 6 weeks for the older twin, we saw only one h/b. I know it is hard to wait. But we are here to tell you that it can (and did) turn out fine!!!!
