DH got summoned for jury duty for the week of the girls' first birthday. We had some special things planned for that day, but now it looks like they will have to be postponed. Ugh. I'm so bummed about this. These are our only children, and we're not planning on having any more. I guess I'll just have to tell them that they spent their first birthday playing inside with mommy until daddy got home... :(

So sorry... Your post caught my eye because I got a jury duty notice... And I sent it in requesting to be excused because I provide care for my 4 small children, and am nursing, but I got a notice back saying that the excuse was denied! So now I have to call tomorrow to find out if I have to report. And to make it worse, DH has been out of town for 3 days, supposed to come home tonight, but one of his flights was delayed, causing him to miss the next flight, leaving him stuck in Chicago until tomorrow. I am going crazy after doing this on my own for 3 days, and one more morning seems insurmountable.... (I don't know how you single moms do it, you are incredible). So, I had to set up an "on call" sitter last minute incase I have to go in. My poor friend (who only has one kid) is terrified that she may have to watch all four of mine (probably for only 30 minutes or so, until DH can make it home).

DH says I should just tote all 4 kids down to the court with me tomorrow to make a point, but I can't handle the thought of even trying to get through the security check with all of them...

Oh I am sorry to hear that. :hug99: Here's hoping they decide he is not right for that jury. ;)

I'm so sorry for you! I got a notice myself a couple months ago, but because I too was/am nursing, they postponed my service until Dec. If I'm still nursing then, they'll postpone it again. I can't believe they denied you. That's awful. Good luck!

Can he request an extension or do you have to provide a specific excuse? My dh tried to postpone his duty (10 days after the girls were born) but he was DENIED! Can you imagine?

Just make the most of the day before or the day after. I know it's not "the same" but the girls will remember what you tell them. So take tons of pictures of the celebration the four of you have, even if it's not on that day.

Sorry to hear about the jury duty but honestly............I don't remember what we did on K&K's first birthday. I remember the party like it was yesterday (it wasn't on their actual day though) but don't remember a thing about the actual day........ I think I went to work with them like a usual day. I delivered on a Wed which means their bday was a Thurs, just a regular work day in the life of mom and K&K. I have no doubt it will be a great day whether he has to work (jury duty) or not!

I would walk in, ready to serve BUT I would tell the person at the window that gives him a # or whatever (been a while for me) that he has really pressing family matter that he needs to take care of and could he please re-schedule.

I had to do this once when I had to have my dog put to sleep. He was gravely ill and when I got home from appearing at jury duty I found him hiding in the bushes (like he was trying to be alone to die type thing) - we managed to get him in and put him down without too much pain or suffering and I did my jury duty (they NEVER pick me to serve) another time!

It always pays to ask. They aren't going to "flag" him as trouble or anything, he'll just (likely) go another time! I hope he'll try!
