So now that I have a little system with the babies, I have a little stretch of time to tell you all about the arrival of our 2 little ones . . . Last Sunday night (the 16th), dh came home with ds and I told him how uncomfortable it is to lay down now and since sitting has been uncomfortable for awhile, all I can do is stand . . . sigh . . . then, all of the sudden, I felt a trickle, followed by another trickle, followed by a gush, then trickle then gush. Since my water didn't break until I was in active labor with my ds, I wasn't sure my water broke, but I had just peed before checking in with dh and the liquid looked clear, so . . . I called the doctor and told her what I was feeling (back crampiness and lower abdominal) and she said to go to the hospital . . . We arrived at the hospital at around 9:30 and was hooked up to monitors. I started feeling contractions more as we drove and as I laid on the bed. Doctor arrived at 11:30 to make sure my water actually had broken and affirmed that it did, but contractions had gotten quite strong in the 2 hours I was at the hospital, so I was sure I was in labor. When dr. checked me, I was 3 cm. I got hooked up the fluids and received the epidural. Doc checked me again at 12:30 or so and then I started feeling contractions and then they started being painful. I had to hold and squeeze someone's hand and it was obvious on the monitor that I was having really strong contractions. I got the bollust in the epidural and the dosage was increased. I then could rest, though I couldn't sleep, just needed to check regularly that they babies were okay . . . when the nurse checked me at 4:15, I was fully dilated, but the doctor wanted to see if the contractions would bring his head down more. By 5 or so, I was pushing his head down in the labor and delivery room (about 6 pushes) before being wheeled to the labor and delivery room to finish the job. After about a half hour of pushing Judah Jay Driesse was born at 6:22 am with the help of forceps and an episiotomy. He cried immediately and scored 10/10 on the apgar 5 minutes after birth. Although she was head down, she was posterior and not very low into the birth canal. My contractions weren't helping greatly and despite my strong pushing, she wasn't coming, then finally with one last exhausted push and ALOT of help from the doctor, Helena ("Layna") Kay Driesse was born at 6:53 am . . . she also cried right away and scored 9/9 on the apgar. thank God! The most "interesting" part of the pushing was when I burst a blood vessel in my vaginal wall and Doctor and assisting Resident were sprayed with the blood. Their faces were literally covered with my blood . . . which made for a confused laboring woman when the whole room burst out laughing. At that point, the last thing I was thinking about was laughing (this happened towards the end of pushing Layna out) . . . needless to say, I was stitched up for quite awhile after labor and I thanked the doctor and resident for cleaning me up before taking care of themselves. I realized when the doctor checked in the next day, that she had no idea how bloody she was until she looked in the mirror . . . I really love her and am so thankful I was in her hands. Most other doctors probably would have delivered Layna via c-section. Although this vaginal recovery is a little more extensive than most and certainly than my ds, I am certain that I am so glad to not have to be recovering from a c-section as well. For any of you out there who are wondering what this whole experience will be like, just try not to worry nor have any starry-eyed views of what it'll be like. Having to push in an OR verses a calm L and D room is quite different and trying to track 2 babies while pushing is certainly nerve-racking. I am so thankful they are here and healthy. If at all possible, have someone else there to support you and dh. In my case, my sister drove 2 hours to be there and although we didn't think she'd be able to come into the OR with me, she did. It meant the world to have her to my left and dh to my right and my doctor who I trust completely in front of me. It is great to be on the other side of the huge belly and dealing with newborn issues again . . . things are going quite well on that front. Twins are so much fun . . . We truly feel "doubly blessed." Dh set up a photo blog. Here is the link so you can see their pictures . . . thanks for your support through this pregnancy Visit My Photoblog
