After fraternal twins what are the odds of having a second set of twins. I know my nephew and his wife had a set of fraternal boys first and next they had a set of ID girls. My daughter is pregnant again. She has been on the pill religiously and hasn't taken any medications that should interfere, but three pregnancy test and all positive seem to indicate another is on the way. What are the odds she might have twins again?

I have heard you are 3 times more likely to have twins again... but Frats, ID just "happen" supposedly (I dont always agree with that info... but that is another thread completely) Anyway, your odds are higher if you were on the BC pill, nursing, have had twins, are overweight, it is July when you conceive and I cant remember the rest LOL! HTH

ETA: all these things usually mean you are dropping more than one egg when you conceive, resulting in Frats.

Oh wow! Congratulations?!?! I have read that a woman is 3 times more likely, or has a 1 in 3000 chance of having a 2nd set of frats.

Three times more likely? I don't think I'm going to break that news to her. Wow! I have twin experience now, but not quite sure at my age if I could handle toddling twins and infant twins. She might have to get her momma some help if there are two again. They came over to tell us tonight and to offer to put the boys in daycare when the new baby(s) arrives which will be summer. But I just don't think I can give the boys up. They are my heart and soul so I'll just have to find a way to keep the boys and the new baby(s). It was a shock. She's a little upset now because she had such a difficult pregnancy and lost a baby prior to the twin pregnancy, but I told her we'll consider this a gift from God and deal with whatever comes our way. Thanks for the info. It'll be a sleepless night around here. I ecstatic, but nervous as well.

    Merry Christmas!

She has a doctor appointment tomorrow evening. Hopefully if they confirm pregnancy they will go ahead and do ultrasound as well. I'm quasi excited. Now that I think another baby(s) is/are coming I feel that natural grandmotherly pride, but I also know it will be an adjustment for all of us. I might take them up on putting the boys in a mother's day out for one or no more than two half days per week, but we talked this morning and I'll play it by ear, but I'm really not ready to give the boys up to go to daycare and just keep a new baby. My friends all think that I'm crazy giving up my retirement to take care of wee ones, but it's one of the greatest joys I have. I worked when my girls were born and I was tired from work, coming home to a house to clean and cooking and I just feel I missed out on so much of the true enjoyment that babies bring. I've learned to let my house go now and just enjoy the boys. I get to see their smiles and their milestones. I get wet kisses and big hugs. I get my hair tugged and I get two little fellas vying for my attention and clambering into my lap. They have so much love and they have given me so much joy - I'll manage. Okay I have talked myself into full blown excitement now.

    Merry Christmas!

    Congrats! Very exciting news.

Just as an addition, I was on the pill and got pregnant a month after getting off. Although I've never found any hard core evidence, I am a strong believer that by being on the pill, your chances of having twins increase dramatically. I'm pretty sure that I got mine that way. Knowing this, I will be sure to go off the pill long before we try for our next baby! Not that there is anything wrong with twins, but I'd be happy with just 1 kiddo next time.

To answer Reyna - the boys are nine months old. They were born at 32 weeks. My daughter has been on the pill since their birth and she hasn't had any medications that should interfere so if tomorrows appointment confirms - she definitely got pregnant on the pill. My sister has two sets of twin grandchildren - both sets belong to one family so that gave me cause to wonder the statistics. Our experience with twins has been wonderful and sometimes I think we didn't get the full effect because they have always been so easy going and easy to take care of. It may give me a false since of security when adding a new little one or two to the mix. But I'd still like to try keeping them all. I can't imagine after having the boys everyday since they were four weeks old and helping my daughter with them that first four weeks that I could just step back and put them in daycare. I'd miss them too much.

I'll let yall know tomorrow after the appointment. I so hope they do an ultrasound as well. I don't know. I just have this feeling there could very well be more than one.

you are a very good grandmother and mother!! I can't imagine my mom watching my kids permanently. She's helped me out the last couple of weeks by watching my three kids. But I know it's exhausting to her. Don't feel guilty if you need a bit of a break when those twins hit 18 months!! LOL! I think 6months -1 year is the honeymoon period...it gets more "interesting" after about 15 months and they begin pushing boundaries.

BTW---your daughter is so amazingly lucky to have you. I know you're always being thoughtful about ways to help without overstepping your bounds. For you to be willing to take all three (four?) and care for them all day is amazing!

I was also wondering....what did you ever decided to do about the christmas portrait idea? I'm not sure I ever *heard* what you decided to do.

    Keep us updated!

As for the portraits - I chose the sensible route. After listening to all the advice here, I knew that my daughter would want the opportunity to dress them and take them and watch as they were posed and photos taken. I went to the studio, checked the cost of various size portraits and finishes and the sitting fee and purchased a gift certificate. We took the boys together to a cheaper studio to have Christmas pictures made so now she can use her gift certificate for the formal portraits after the first of the year when they turn one. I'd rather her be happy with the gift than surprised. I know that she's pleased because she told her grandmother in law at Bunco the other night that they had a special photography appointment coming up soon and that she was going to get to go to Cantrells. She was very excited. I know that everytime we go to the Mall and Cantrells has a photo display she oohs and ahhs over it, so I already knew where she wanted to go but it was just so expensive. The boys only turn one once or twice if you multiply time 2. Needless to say, I'll be anxious to purchase my own portraits once they are made.

    Thanks for asking.

I'm anxiously waiting here too. She couldn't get an appointment until 5 this afternoon and that will just be the OB check. They wouldn't schedule an ultrasound on just the HPT so they have to confirm and then if positive will have the ultrasound later this week or early next. I've just worked myself into full blown excitement now. I'll be disappointed if it's a false positive (or three false positives - she took three tests). I really love being a grandmother!

I am sure she is pregnant after 3 positives! My ob does a quick u/s for dating, maybe they will take a quick peek? Hopefully?

The test is positive. My daughter is pregnant again. Her due date is my birthday - August 18 - what a birthday present that will be. The doctor didn't schedule an ultrasound until the first week in Jan. Her OB said there is so much that can happen to begin with, if it is multiples again, he would rather wait until January to be certain everything is okay. When she was pregnant with the twins they had done an ultrasound at 4 weeks and saw the two, but he cautioned us that so much could happen early in the pregnancy and he didn't want us to expect twins until she was further along and that the two sacs continued to be there. She's hoping for a singleton, but she's aware it could be twins or ... well I'll stick with twins. I haven't let my imagination go further. I'll update after the ultrasound. You young ladies have all been so kind. Thank you for your interest and all your help.

The good thing about pregnancies....you've got 9 months to get used to the idea of having a baby! I'm so happy for you. Hope all goes smoothly.

Thank you ladies for the encouragement and congratulations! As soon as my daughter got home last night, we launched into full planning mode. While my daughter was planning only on the twins, she sold most of her big baby items, etc. Luckily I had purchased sets of everything for my house as well and I still have mine. If she has just one baby we'll split my set and if she has multiples, we'll just transport what is needed back and forth each day. We learned from the boys that they don't always want to do the same things at the same time, so we'll make do with what we have. She had bagged up her maternity clothes to take to Goodwill, but I hadn't taken them yet, so yeah! Good thing I procrastinated. If she'll pick out some fabric, I'll start sewing comforters and shams for toddler beds to get ready for the boys. We had already started a playroom at their house with bright colors and murals on the walls of monkeys, so pretty sure we won't find anything ready made to go with that theme. The walls are bright turquoise and we did the trim and painted the tables and chairs and bookcases and toy box in lime green. She had found a pretty fabric in turquoise and lime green in a plaid so I had already made their curtains for the playroom that will now be a boys bedroom. Okay G is fussing at me now for not playing with them, so typing has to end for a while so I can get down in the floor and play with the boys. They'll want to play for a while before they lay down for their morning nap. They are such good boys. I know I brag on them all the time, but they have such sweet dispositions and rarely cry. I can take them anywhere. Thanks Again!
