Ok, it's my first experience EVER with prunes. Jacob and Mia are constipated. I bought prunes (came in a plastic bag, like dried fruit, isn't that what a prune is?) What do I do? A neighbor told me to boil them and use the water. What are other thoughts?

PRUNES! My ped told me to mix 1/2 teaspoon of infant prune juice in with the formula or expressed milk. I know when we were kids my mom would boil the prunes and down the hatch with it all, but I think using the water from this method might be a little too potent for infants, just my opinion. Luckily, my twin's got back to regular so I didn't try the prune juice thing.

The one time I used prunes, I boiled them and used the mushy stuff mixed with water. But,1 TBSP of dark karo syrup in a bottle is an easier solution for me and it works for my boys.

My girl was constipated the last five days. I went to the stores and bought the prune fruits... the one that is already made. I bought the first feeding one and gave her the whole container in the morning and the next in the afternoon. She pooped all over like crazy. I have never seen so much p.... since she was born. It worked great. Its about a dollar of so. Should be in the same place where they have other babies foods and fruits.

We've always just fed them straight baby food prunes (Gerber makes it in a #1). Watch out...fast (and sometimes MESSY) results!

Are you starting solids? If you're kiddos are prone to constipation, I would avoid rice cereal & bananas, which are both constipating. We have had good results using oatmeal.

Our ped also recommended these methods for relieving constipation before we were on solids. They both worked for us (although the apple juice took a couple of tries before getting results).

1 tsp. (LIGHT) Karo Syrup in 4 oz. bottle

2 oz. bottle of diluted (50 water) apple juice

Prune juice or pureed prunes would be the way that I would go!! I would check the websites that help you with making your own baby food. (wholesomebabyfood.com i think) and see what they say!!

    Good luck Melissa!

don't they have the ready made Gerber or Beechnut prunes or are you not in an area where they have that ready made stuff? If not, I guess you could boil them and squeeze out the juice and mix it with water and give it in a bottle? Or you could peel the outside off and take the prune pulp (not sure if that's what it's called) and mash it bits and feed it to them? Do you have a blender or a food processor? if so, perhaps you could pop them in there and then spoon feed them that way? If all else fail you could just get prune juice and mix 2 ounces of the juice with 2 ounces of water. Both ways worked wonders for my girls but now they won't drink the prune juice/water from a bottle so we have to mix it in with their cereal.

We used the gerber stage 1 prunes. In fact, I had some leftover packages that were about to expire recently, and let the kids eat them (they fed themselves; yes we had them in the pantry for awhile). Well, they both had diaper blow outs that night up to their ears. So be prepared!!!!!
