I've forgotten what it's like to buy baby clothes

My son is only 3, but I've already forgotten what it's like to buy baby clothes.

I'm having boy/ boy fraternal twins. I would like to dress them alike--at least at first :) I wont be having any showers and do not expect to get any significant clothing gifts. So I'll be buying everything (which is fine--I'm not complaining). I just wanted to clarify that what I buy is what I have.

Any rules of thumb on how many outfits and how long I should expect them to last? I'm guessing that the presumably smaller twins will stay in 0-3 months until they are about 4 months or so? And I should have a few newborn outfits on hand to last the first month or so? and a bunch of gowns?

Any other tips/ thoughts/ brand recommendations and advice is appreciated!

My only recommendation is don't buy too many outfits and keep the tags and the receipts together until you are sure you will use them. My girls were tiny and wore preemie outfits until they were about 6 weeks old. Then they flew through newborn, but were in 0-3 months forever! They lived in onesies and footy sleep and plays until they were much older. I had so many cute outfits that they never wore because I wanted them to be comfy. Congratulations and we'll see you on FY soon!

Depends how often you want to do laundry. Mine lived in sleepers (much prefer the zipper ones) then onesies the first few months... A good number was about 8 per kid so I can do laundry every 2-3 days. Now I try to have 6 every day outfits and 4 sleepers per kid. For the sizes, DS was out of 0-3 months clothes at 2 months, and DD at 3.5 months, so it really depends on the baby. They were both very small at birth (3lb and 4.5lb at 36 weeks). We used newborn outfits for over a month though.

Same thing happened to me! And I guess my girls take after DH's side of the family b/c they are staying pretty small - they are 13 months old now but still are wearing 9 month size, I've got so many clothes that they've never worn and won't get to wear b/c I bought them ahead of time so they aren't fitting them at the right time, if that makes sense.

Don´t do what MIL and I did which was to go and buy lots of really cute clothes when pg as you just wont use them - at least I didn´t. If you cant resist the temptation then keep the tags and receipts (I washed and ironed everything as part of my nesting spree  ) as you can then exchange or give them away to friends.

Mine lived in onsies for the first 3 months of their lives as it was just so much easier. DD was (and still is) a pukey baby so we were constantly changing her. When we went out, we dressed them up but it wasnt that often. I used to push mine around in their carry cots in their PJs - LOL! I´d buy a few preemie outfits and 0-3 months then see how you go. When you buy clothes, think of the weather and season. I received so many summer clothes for a 6-month old and mine never wore them as they´re 6 months now and it´s November!

Buy bibs with plastic backing (to stop the milk/food soaking through to their clothes) and velcro. Tie up bibs are a nightmare! Also, we use the material only bibs (with velcro) under DD´s PJs so if she is sick then she doesn´t get overly wet and cold.

My two flew through sizes really fast and are now wearing sizes for 9 months old. When I have the urge to shop for them (which is everytime I go to the shops! ) I buy big!!!

    GL & congrats on B/B twins :D

I had with twins and singletons, on hand for ANY size at least 1-2 wks worth of clothes. I knew I was not going to want to do laundry every 2-3 days. So just in case any of my kiddos were the poopy or spit up type I wanted to know that I would have at least 2 outfits on hand for one day. So that would mean 14 sleepers (this is for each child), 14 onesies, 14 complete outfits, 14 prs of socks if you like them matching some what, 14 little sleep gowns etc. That way if they had a day of a lot of spitting up I still wouldn't have to do laundry. People around me thought I was crazy but I am the one that was going to have to be doing the laundry if i needed outfits right now and ran out.
So NB (or preemie in this case), 0-3, 3-6, every size was the same thing. Till around 12 mos then I just did whatever with how many I had on hand.
I shop a LOT Of garage sales and 2nd hand tho so it was very affordable to pick up a ton of diff clothes.

    Congratulations! :yahoo:
Mine were born at 38 weeks, both close to 7 pounds. I only bought 2 newborn outfits each, and then a pile of onesies in 0-3 months. They were in NB for 2 or 3 weeks, and 0-3 months for the first 3 months. We didn't use many of the cute little outfits as it was too much hassle to change their nappies/diapers, and they spit up a lot, so the onesies were the best bet, as you can buy them in sets of 5 for as little as $10 at Target.
We only started using the nicer outfits once we got to the 3-6 month range, as we would go out more often.

I shopped for a lot of the onesies at Target, but for good sales, I still go to Carters. Just a couple days ago they had 50% off their entire store, and I had a coupon for 25% off when you spend over $100, so I got 75% off. I buy everything on sale, and I won't spend over $10 on any piece of clothing. If you sign up for Carters emails, they send you coupons pretty much every week, and the good thing is you can use them on sale items.

I don't really shop at the Children's Place, but recently I went through their sale section online, and bought a total of 8 pieces for less than $35 including shipping. Again, check online for coupon codes before you buy, and sign up for their emails.

I admit, my babies have a lot of clothes, but I still normally need to wash them 2-3 times a week.

Make sure you check the Moms of Multiple Clubs in your area too. Although I guess you'll have to wait for the Spring sales now, but you can get a lot of cheap clothes over there... I'm not buying anything for this Summer, I will get everything there in March. Just last month I got two children's place shirts and two pants for $8.

Luckily, I kept all my older boys' clothes. Unluckily, this meant that I could not always enjoy dressing the twins alike, haha!

My guys arrived at 34 weeks, and both were in preemie clothes for about a month.
They wore a ton of gowns, of course they were newborn during the Summer, so I didn't have to worry about them getting cold, etc. Strapping them into carseats.
Now they wear mostly footed pajamas.
Sundays, I try to dress them up a little more, and occasionally when we go out in public or to special places.

Gowns are really great in the beginning for midnight, 2 am, 4 am, 6 am, etc. diaper changes when you just can't afford to fumble with snaps.
Footed pajamas are nice and snuggly so that you don't have to worry about socks and booties.
Everything else is just icing on the cake to enjoy.

My two were born at 35.5 weeks and were 7lbs3oz and 5lbs11 oz. Both wore premies at first, but we only had a few items and so we undressed them to feed them every time (both to prevent having to do laundry every day). I think that by the time Will was at about 8 lbs, he moved into newborn, and Andy was maybe 7.5 lbs when he did. There was a huge difference in the brands for premie size, so some stuff only lasted a week. Others I still believe must have been mislabeled b/c there was no way it was premie size!

Both are still in newborn, Will's almost to 10 lbs and Andy is on the high side of 8. The problem for both of them is the length, so I think Will will be out of NB sleepers at least in the next few days--the two piece things last longer, since their long legs don't effect them as much. I need to start washing the 0-3 soon!

often you can have very different sized babies and even if they are the similar size at birth they can grow at different rates.
Zippered sleepers are a MUST -- plus buy the nicest ones you can find. Since they spend so much time in them you want them to look cute.
NO clothes that need to be IRONED you will NEVER wear them
clothes they might sleep in, Carters has some cotton outfits that the babies could sleep in and still be comfy.
Look in Walmart for SNAP button bibs !! The velcro bibs stick to everything in your wash and never stick to themselves.
Dollar store recieving blankets for spit ups, and wash clothes.
Adult towels since the baby towels are cheap crappy things.
Gap or Osh gosh socks only. maybe Carter socks too.
A moses basket is great !!
do not get matching toys, they don't need them. or matching exercausers....
matching clothes are GREAT, your brain only needs to think of ONE outfit for the day and then just double it. Most days my brain can't think of two different outfits for that days weather.....
