I am going in Friday to get an IUD birth control put in.

    Questions I have:

    1. Does it hurt when they put it in?

    2. Does it affect menstral cycle? ( I know when I used to take the depo shot my menstral cycle went away)

    3. What to expect? I know this sounds crazy but I am kinda nervous. Side affects?

    4. DH is going with me to watch the babies while I get it done. Is there any pain after they put it in or will he be able to return to work and not have to watch the twins the rest of the day?

    Thanks for any info.

I had a copper T. It had to be inserted (and removed) during my period, so my cervix would be more open. It did not hurt except for a little pinch. My periods were much heavier on it than they were without it (I hear the one with hormones does not have this effect). I got up and left after the insertion and it was like nothing had happened; I was fine.

Mine only hurt for a little while, but some people get cramps all day. I have has it twice before I had Samuel and Damien , and I just had one put in recently. Before I had no period at all, this time I have been spotting off and on for 5 weeks. I had no real side effects other than the spotting. As far as how you will fair for the rest of the day it depends, I was fine but I have heard of others having bad cramps. Best of luck to you and if you have any other questions feel free to IM me.

I have the mirena one and it hurt like **** going in. I am a baby when it comes to pain though. It only hurts for less than a minute and I had minimal cramping for a few hours. As far as menstral cycles go, it says in the paper they gave me that it can make them lighter or nonexistant. I only got it 2 weeks ago, so I don't know. Hope this helps!

I have the Paragard (copper T) IUD. It hurt going in, and I had bad menstrual-type cramps for a couple days after. Annoying, but I could still function just fine. I'm BFing, so no periods (whoohoo!), but when I had one before, the only change in my cycle was heavier periods.

It all depends what kind of IUD you're getting. Which have you picked out? The Mirena releases hormones that suppress ovulation, and a lot of women have lighter or no periods on it. Since the Mirena is hormonal, you may also have the kind of side effects you'd expect with BCPs. The Paragard has no hormones, so no side effects (one main reason why I chose it).

Good luck! It shouldn't be too bad. IUDs are great birth control.

I saw another post on this awhile back and someone mentioned taking an ibuprofen before your appointment and that should help with some of the pain.

I just got mine taken out because I had a period for about 4 months every other week...it STUNK! But, my OB said that only happens to about 5% of women. (i had the mirena)

It did not hurt to get in...uncomfortable, but not painful....and, I am a wuss! I had no other side effects except constant spotting for a long time.

I hope it works for you!!

I had the Mirena and got it out after 6.5 months because I bled all but a couple days of every month. It wasn't just spotting either it was heavy bleeding.

I agree it didn't hurt going in--take some motrin about an half hour before you have it done and you should be fine. You might have some cramping that day but other than that you should be fine. I was a little dizzy afterwards and had to lay down for a few minutes while still in the office.

Mary, I got my first one around 7 weeks post partum. Wasn't bad. But I was so "hormoned out" that I couldn't fathom the Mirena! Well periods were HORRIBLE on the COPPER one, I 2.5 yrs. after the first one, I got the Mirena. They took out the Copper (OUCH!!!!) and put in the Mirena (OW OW OW!!!) I think it hurt the 2nd time more because I was so far post partum. Yours could be more mild since you aren't as far past.

It was very uncomfortable and did hurt. I cramped BAD for about an hour. Then I was fine! Totally fine!!

I am still having one continuous cycle. (Heavy spotting for the past month and now starting a new cycle with fresh stuff :( ) but I also asked about this an most people have minimal periods after it's been in for a while. So I am banking on it!! I'm cramping pretty bad today and hope that will go away with time too!! ONLY time will tell!!

Good luck and it's WORTH IT. It's worth the discomfort and the cramping for a little while after. I took 3 advil before hand and then 4 hrs. later took 3 more for good measure.

I have the mirena and it didn't hurt at all going in. It was inserted toward the end of my period. I took 2 motrin and didn't feel a thing. Was back home in 30 minutes and carried on with my day without any issues.
My cycle's been a bit wonky since getting it. After the first cycle with it, all I get is a few days of spotting.
So far I love it and am thrilled I went with the mirena.

    Good luck!

    1. Does it hurt when they put it in?
I didn't think it was that bad, just a few pinches.

    2. Does it affect menstral cycle? ( I know when I used to take the depo shot my menstral cycle went away)
I bled for 2 wks after it was put in, and nothing since (2 wks, I was also on depo before the twins and I didn't have periods)

    3. What to expect? I know this sounds crazy but I am kinda nervous. Side affects?
I really didn't have any cramps or sensitivity

    4. DH is going with me to watch the babies while I get it done. Is there any pain after they put it in or will he be able to return to work and not have to watch the twins the rest of the day?
I was fine, my mom went with me and we had the twins with us, we went to lunch right after.

I had the Paragard IUD (non-hormonal) put in at 6 wks postpartum. The nurse gave me some ibuprofen before I had it put in. It hurt a bit going in and had some cramps after but wasn't that bad. I was out of the office in less than 30 minutes. It has made my period some heavier, but no other side effects.

Thanks for all the advice. I am definately going to take some Motrin before hand. I am glad I asked. I think I am getting the harmonal one. That is what they told me when I was still pregnant. Thanks again ladies. Gotta love this website. :)

I had Mirena inserted early Feb (babies born late Nov). It hurt a little but very minor. A little bit of cramping now and then, but nothing worse than a regular period. I had on and off spotting for 3-4 months (which my doc warned me for) but by the time I got really sick and tired of it ... it was gone. Now I hardly have periods at all, and if I have only some light bleeding or spotting for 1 or 2 days.

    I am happy with it.
