Well today is day 5 of the rash. One of my boys (20 months) developed a red itchy rash on his tummy last Thursday. I took him to his ped. and he said it could be scabies and gave me a pesticide to put on him. Well I could tell he was unsure so I waited to see what would happen. He now has a few patches on his knee. They start as almost flesh colored bumps, turn pink and then form a patch in some spots, some spots just stay in little bumps. They itch him, but not to the point where he isn't enjoying his day. This morning I took him to see my MD for a second opinion, he came out in the waiting room and said no way it was scabies, that it looked like eczema and to put a little steroid cream on it. Well with it being day 5 and his bro (as well as no one else) has any symptoms... should I just believe it is eczema or some weird "uncontagious" rash that will just go away? I hesitate to pay another copay at the ped. when he will probably just get mad at me and tell me I should have tried the pesticide. BTW, I am thinking about finding a new one anyway! So my questions are...any ideas what the rash could be, and would you just wait it out?

    Thanks!!!

There are so many rashes, and so many different reasons for it, it's hard to tell. I would try some hydrocortizone on it and see if that helps (that way if it is eczema, that should help it~my kids are huge eczema kids, and it usually helps them). Have you tried benedryl just incase it was some sort of allergy to something?

Sounds like ezcema but I guess it could be scabies.

For ezcema (which only J gets), we use aveeno bath and lotion and use a little extra vasoline/aquaphor on the patches (a few times a day when he's got an "active" patch). His patches are kind of skin colored to reddish (depending on how much he's been scratching) and get rough like sandpaperish.

It can't hurt to try that for a couple of days and see if it makes a difference before using the medication. I rarely have to use a steriod cream (cortizone) for the ezcema.

Do what's best for you and what makes you the most comfortable!

My guys both have excema. It could be this. It starts as itching and then turns into a red rash. I treat mine with a steriod cream as well as aquaphor (over the counter). Oatmeal baths could help too.

Okay so an update to this one, Austin broke a fever last night. So it was day 6 of the rash. Now the rash on his tummy has started to fade and not be as raised. It looks so much better and he doesn't mess with it. His knee on the other hand has some new patches that he is itching at. They look just like his tummy did when it first started. His fever is low grade but only drops with meds, then about 4 hours later I have to repeat to lower it again. I have a call into the ped. to see if I should bring him in. He was just there Friday, and other than the rash, checked out okay. I know sometimes kids get a rash before getting sick, but does it itch? Anyone have any ideas? Should I call the ped. again and just bring him in, or try and let it run its course? Oh and a side note, other than trouble falling asleep at night, he is acting fine. He was just dancing to the Backyardigans theme song with is bro :)

Yes, there are lots of viruses that include rashes. If the fever is low grade, could he be working on a molar or something, sometimes teeth do crazy things. Or did he get his shots about a week or two ago, sometimes they can react to the MMR or one of the others? There are so many things, but I think if the rash stays and the fever stays I'd at least call and see what they say.
