Is your hair falling out?

I have really thick, long hair...I read somewhere that due to hormones, you can lose quite a bit of hair post partum...and I am losing more hair than ever! I have to brush my hair outside so that I don't leave hair all over the house! I used to lose hair before the twins, but this is crazy!

Does this happen to anyone? Should I be concerned at some point? I had some problems with my thyroid before I got pregnant, so I am wondering if this is thyroid issues, or just normal hormonal issues...

I wasn't sure if I should post this in FY or in the Health Relates Issues...?

    Thank you!

yep, totally normal. i lost tons of hair, especially around my face, it was weird. it got the worst around 4-5 months pp and now has tapered off to my regular shedding pattern. and luckily the hair that fell out is finally filling back in..

I've lost tons of hair as well. I've heard it's completely normal and will stop.

Yes, I am still losing some, but not as much as before. Totally normal. Good thing I have a lot of hair!

totally normal. I too have long thick hair but it got even thicker while pregnant. Well, you can say good bye to the added thickness. It will get back to the way it was pre-pregnancy. I do think with long hair it looks more than it really is but I would lose clumps each time I brushed or showered.

i read up on this when my hair started falling out because it freaked me out. my hair is very fine so i was afraid i would start looking bald!

it turns out only about 1/3 of your hair is in a growth phase at any time. you go through growth phases, pauses, and shedding phases. but when you're pregnant your body shuts off the shedding phase and all you get is growth and resting phases. then when your hormones start to settle out after delivery everything that should have been shed over the last 9 months suddenly goes into its shedding phase all at once.

it's really freaky, though, even when you know why it's happening.

Definitely normal! I started losing hair at 3 months pp till around 5 months pp. I lost TONS of hair and I was afriad I'd be bald! I would sweep my hand through my hair and have a handful of hair. I have fine but a lot of hair. I lost at least half. It is finally growing back in.

    Scary but normal!

It is totally normal & it took longer to stop falling out after the twins than my other pregnancies. Maybe because hormone levels are higher & take longer to go back to normal? I'm not sure, but the doctor explained to me that you don't lose much hair at all while pregnant, not as much you would normally lose in that time, then afterwards what should have come out before, starts falling out. It will stop eventually.

I fill a large hairbrush with hair every time I brush .I have to keep it tied up throughout the day or it gets everywhere. Its much worse this time as compared with my other past postpartum period. I am hoping I don't have to cut it short to hide my bald spots

I quit losing my hair shortly after my menstrual cycles returned to normal. It's pretty normal and alarming all at the same time!

I was losing hair like crazy for the first 4 months pp. It was crazy and I thought I was going nuts, but it pretty much stopped at month 5.

Totally normal. Depressing, but normal. With DS #1 it started about 6 mos pp and lasted a few months. With my second pregnancy (which ended in m/c), my hair began to fall out while I was still pregnant. Hasn't started yet since the twins. Oh, I can't wait!!! :nea:

I had the same thing! Except i had a weave iun for a couple of months and when i took it out i thought i had permanantly damaged my hair judging by the clmups that came out with the weave!!!!! It is growing back so i am pretty sure it's not permanant damage from anything i have done to my hair thankgod! Nobody warns you that your are all but ready for the scrap yard after giving birth! lol

Glad you posted this... my hair loss is HORRIBLE. Like pp said, I fill a brush every time I dry my hair. And, unfortunately, it looks like mostly gray hairs are replacing it. I'm 7 mo pp and it started around 4 mo pp. It's much worse this time with my singleton than it was with the twins.

UGH - my hair loss is a pain for the entire house. Hair floating everywhere, falling in clumps in the shower, on the back of my clothes, stuck to my husbands face if I hug him, I could go on...LOL :gah:

it was bad for me because my hair was down to the middle of my back. so not only was i losing hair everywhere, but it was long and really obnoxious. every now and then i would go to change one of the babies and find one of my hairs in there. :bad:

Yeah, mine is falling out like crazy. I have extremely fine hair (my hairdresser calls it "frog fur") and while I was pregnant, it almost looked normal! That lasted until I cut way back on the breastfeeding/pumping at 10 months, and now it's all fallen out. I swear I have bald spots on my scalp. :(

It's so bad, I'm almost tempted to get pregnant again to get my hair back!

Yes, totally normal. Mine did it for about 18 months :woah: I hate that feeling of hair tickling my arm or my chest.

I remember after having DS being in the shower and feeling something running down my leg. When I saw it was a clump of hair I freaked out! I didn't realize how much might actually be lost but learned it was completely normal. It has happened with each subsequent pregnancy as well.
