Have you ever heard of this? someone said they read it in a book about breastfeeding, but that the source wasn't cited:

It was discussed in the context of a reason for why nursing was better than pumping... "when the child has direct connection to your nipple, your body recognizes the germs in her saliva and thus creates antibodies specifically for those things that she’s currently fighting"

    is that true??

To be honest, I have never heard that before... BUT it is worth looking into and checking it out! :)

eta: I am not finding anything on the internet about it.. perhaps I'm looking in the wrong spots. :unknw:

You know, I remember reading that somewhere about cows and calves, so I would assume that it would be true of humans as well if it is true of other mammals. I can't remember the source though...

I've never heard it, but it wouldn't suprise me, BF is such a miraculous thing.

On a realated question. I was wondering lately... I never pumped so I never stored any milk--but doesn't you milk change according to the babies needs as it ages? If so, what does that mean for those who have a frozen stash...
    just wondering.

I know my SIL nursed the girls a couple of times, (that's not unusual here in Mexico) but the thing that worried me most about it was her son is 9 months older than my girls, so she had big baby milk rather than newborn milk.

Hmm... I've never heard that either. It wouldn't surprise me. OTOH, I'd also think that ANY mom, nursing or bottle-feeding, is going to be VERY exposed to whatever bugs her babies are fighting. You spend your whole day wiping butts and having your cheek used as a snot rag and letting babies play "dentist" and stick their drooly, chewed-up fingers into your mouth... Not like you need mouth on nipple to get contact with all those germs! :p

I have not heard this exact thing, BUT......

Medically the way viruses and bugs enter our system is thru mucous membranes or direct contact to the circulatory system. So it stands to reason that by nursing some of their "bugs" could get into our bodies by contact, though I can't imagine all that well.

And as far as pumped milk goes, yes, it does change but not so much that it would hurt the baby, the main things that change are that it gets higher in calories content per amount pumped and contains specific antibodies to that current time.

I like the idea, hopefully it is true. My babies ahve really only been sick 1 time in almost 10 months. Yeah. I am so glad I could do that for them. Hopefully they will be all built up so when they are weaned they wont' get sick all the time.
