Is this "OK" to do

For two nights in a row, Jonathan has been crying whenever i lay him down to sleep in his crib. The first night, I held and bounced him and DH and I only got 3 hours of sleep. Last night, I put him in the swing and he slept marvously.

Is this appropriate? WHat should I do?

I would say in the early days you do whatever works!!! If this is what works right now, I say go for it.

Each baby is different and you have to do what works for you, dh and the babies.

I agree with the pp- you are in survival mode and should do whatever you need to to get through!

I agree w/ pp. A lot of babies like to sleep (and sleep well) in swings.

Not to alarm you, but if he usually lays down to sleep fine, then I would consider the possibility of an ear infection. It hurts worse when laying down flat, so IF this is what is wrong w/ him, that could be another reason why he slept better in the swing (since its on an incline and not flat) I would just keep an eye on him and if he runs a fever, etc. have him checked.
Also, you might want to try laying him down flat during the day (if you're not already doing this) and just see if he cries or seems uncomfortable.
I might just be paranoid when it comes to E.I.s b/c my twins had them BAD and ended up w/ tubes, so I hope he is healthy and just being a baby! :D

Absolutely! You do anything that gets you through the nights and days! I did so many things with Owen (and the girls for that matter) that everyone told me I shouldn't do, and we've all come through just fine! You're always going to get conflicting advice, because the schools of thought on whats "OK" change so much. They're still so little that there's no way to set bad habits yet, if that worries you. You can't spoil them that young, I think that's one of the few things you'll hear every Mom on TS agree with!

Mine slept in a swing, bouncy, or car seat for the first 4 months due to reflux. Do whatever it takes to get them to sleep so you can get some rest in the early days. Hang in there.

If they will sleep that way, let them do it. When they are tiny you need to do whatever you can to get some sleep.

Mine too and they didn't even have reflux! You do everything you can to get your rest so you can be the best you can be for them.

    I completely agree!

Also, I think 3 hours of sleep, for you, at their age is a great start too! In the beginning, I had nights when I was lucky to get one!

I would say yes, if they are only 6 days old. By about 2-3 weeks old though I would do my best to get them to be sleeping in their crib or whatever you want them to be permenantly sleeping in at night. I can remember a couple of nights that I slept with one of them on my chest or in the swing. Sometimes there are nights when you do whatever it takes to get them to sleep. However, I tried my hardest to get them to sleep in their crib and they both sleep beautifully in their crib now.

Mine only slept in their swings for the first few months. Do what works and gets you time to sleep too!

LOVE THE SWINGS!!! LOL ... If it wasn't for those I'm not sure how I would've made it through those first few weeks. There were times when my DH and I would rotate who slept on the couch (swings were in the living room) just so the babies would sleep and so could we! Take a deep breath and relax!! Totally okay!

Mine slep in bouncy/vibrating chairs and occasionally the swing in the early days! Also, do you have a white noise machine or CD w/white noise or even a fan? Those always worked beautifully for my boys, they love the sound of the vaccum cleaner for some reason and still listen to the white noise CD now at bedtime and naptimes! I think it is called "For Crying Out Loud" and I got it on Amazon.com-just a thought! Good Luck!

When I can't get Riley to sleep in the crib I will start him out in the swing and then when I go to bed about 2-3 hours after he went to bed, I will move him to the crib. For a while, I was doing this every night, but now, it's only once in a while. He loved his swing! He actually sleeps better for naps in it!

I agree with everyone else that you are in survival mode. Even tho my boys are 3 mos, I am still in survival mode!

In the early days, you do what you have to for some sleep. We would have to put DS in a bouncy seat for him to sleep at night. Usually after the first night feeding, he would then sleep okay in the crib. Hang in there Momma!
