Is this normal?

Since yesterday I have been laying down. Was on the sofa literally all day yesterday and looks like I will be there again today. When I get up and walk around, even to go to the bathroom or to grab a refill of water, my stomach tightens up and gets very uncomfortable. It doesn't hurt. I am not in any pain, no cramps, no discharge. Just feels so much better laying down. Is this normal? I feel like I have never experienced pregnancy before. It has just been so long. My youngest will be 11 in about a month, so some time since I have done this and with this time around it being twins, well, no clue what is normal or not.

I used to have the same thing when I was pregnant. It sounds to me like its round ligament pain. You may want to mention it to your Dr. the next time you go in.

Am I overreacting by camping out on the sofa? I feel guilty as can be. Hate that my husband cooked me dinner last night and did the dishes. I am just so paranoid this pregnancy.

I dont think you are overreacting at all. If you are worried about it, call your Dr. or go in to L&D so they can check you out. It is so much better to be safe than sorry. When I was having PTL, (unbenonced to me) I wrote it off for a little over a day, and when I finally went in I was shocked to find out what was going on. Im not saying thats what is going on with you, but peace of mind can go a long way.

I have to head out for a bit, going to pick up a stroller, so will see how I do while we are out.

I do agree peace of mind can go a long way. Wondering how my husband keeps peace of mind at all time during this pregnancy. He doesn't stress at all and it drives me crazy.

You said you have been having stomach tightening, that sounds like contractions to me. If it persists, I would get checked out.

My favorite treatment for round ligament pain is a nice soak in the tub.
You can also try a heat pack. Make your own with a tube sock, fill with rice then tie off the end. Put in the microwave until warm, then place along the sides of that belly where the ligaments are.

You might just be having Braxton Hicks Contractions, which usually you start to notice when you are in the 2nd trimester, at least I did. They were definitely stronger w/ the twins than w/ my singleton and happened earlier too. As PP have said if you are concerned it never hurts to call the Dr.

i was going to suggest BH as well because mine started at about 20wks. as long as you dont have several in a small amt of time i wouldnt worry, but also like everyone else has said peace of mind is better, and if you have to spend 4 hrs at l & d just to make sure nothing is wrong its worth it. since 21wks ive been to L & d 2x. dont plan on going back for a while but things always change. if ur worried call and ask what they think you should do. hope the pain goes away for u :hug99:

I'm on bed rest ( do to the baby being over my cervix, not for contractions) so I spend most of my day lying on the sofa. I notice that when I do get up my stomach does feel tighter on top but not the whole thing. I was told my last pregnancy (single) that if it goes away when you change positions it is usually ok. I was planning on double checking with my peri in the am just to be safe. Just take it easy if you are worried, and drink lots of water and check with yout doc. It never hurts to be too cautious!!

Well it stays tight, rock hard for as long as I am on my feet...just got home from going and picking up a snap and go from someone using craigslist, stomach as been rock hard the whole time moving around...if I lay down after some time it gets softer.

Ok, so it is ok to soak in the tub when pregnant? I thought we weren't suppose to do that or is that an old wives tale?

Yeah, it sounds like Braxton Hicks. However, I would definitely keep your doctor informed. I know mine wants to know if I have any type of contractions. Oh and he also told me it's not contractions if the top of your stomach feels tight. Just keep drinking water, take it easy and call the doc! :)

Yep it's ok to soak in the tub. I believe they don't want you to if your water has broken.

You just don't want to raise your core body temp, so that's why you can't do hot tubs or saunas. I take a hot bath every day.

The entire stomach tightens, gets so hard I could bounce quarters off it lol Has been better these last few hours. Laying on the sofa now. Told hubby that he shouldn't be surprised if I get him within the next 24 hours to take me into L&D to get checked out.

Well it sounds like BH but definitely put a call into your OB. I was in a similar situation last weekend but with multiple BH mainly while standing but also when lying down (when they would usually go away). I called the OB and he said to get to L&D right away. I was having 10-15 BH/hr. Turns out I was a little dehydrated and they eased up once I was hydrated but it was enough to scare me. I wouldn't want your BH to lead to cervical dilatation, kwim? At least call your OB so they are informed if nothing else. :hug99:

If I am dehydrated, that would be a miricale. I have really upped my water intake over the last few days, never thought I could drink so much water lol

Not sure how the bh are today, have been in bed most of the day, reading, playing video games, relaxing. Just got up and will move around some.

Had no clue bh could cause dilation, thought only regular ones could.

I just started having this symptom about 2 weeks ago. My belly hardening was contractions...it wasn't always the whole belly, although they've gotten stronger in the last couple of weeks. Fortunately they haven't been labor contractions as my cervix has remained unchanged (it's been checked three times in the last two weeks). I went into L and D once because I had about 8 in one hour. I do have them mostly with movement though, usually. Those (I have heard) are most likely BH contractions but always play it safe. I still get them pretty often but my Dr tells me when I have them to chug water and lie on my side. If they don't go away and continue with frequency, I'm told to call or go in. Just give your doctor a call and let him/her know what's going on so you can be advised for your own personal situation. It's MUCH better to be safe than sorry. Labor pains don't have to hurt, which was news to me!

When I landed a trip to L&D about a month ago, I knew I was having contractions, but was amazed to find out I was contracting more than every 3 minutes  . Luckily we caught it quick and I was only 1cm dilated and had cervical shortening (had NONE earlier in the week), but they did do mag and now I'm home on bedrest and Procardia. I'm just passing this on because you just never can tell what those contractions are doing and it never hurts to be safe and get them checked out just on the whim that something could be going on while it's still early enough to be able to do something about it. Take care!

Went and saw my doc today. He did a cervix check. Everything is how it should be. He said I was doing the right thing, laying down, lots of water. He told me not to hesitate to come back in, that it is better safe than sorry. He made me feel good, not like I was overreacting, like I was worried about.

I'm so glad you posted this! I was having the same issues today! Any other time before today I would notice BH contx if I was on my feet too long. Today whenever I walked my belly felt all tight and would remain tight while I was up. I drink lots of water (almost 2 gal. a day!). I called my dr. today and he didn't seem to be too worried, only if they were regular contx. So tonight I'm ordering delivery for my boys and I for dinner and we're staying in bed to watch The Grinch!

One more thing I was concerned about which I didn't mention to my dr. is that sometimes lately when I am going to the bathroom there is a lot of pressure down there. This is just when urinating. Should I be concerned about that? Or would that mostly be the babies just being in a position to make it feel that way?

Ordering in sounds like a great idea :)

Pressure could be from postion of the babies. I am noticing that the feeling of needing to go is much more intense, like I won't be able to hold it. Lucas, Baby A, has been moving non-stop for days now and I think that is why. I didn't mention it today.

what position are your babies in? At my U/S last week they were head to head up by my belly button. Unless someone turned I can't imagine I'd feel that much pressure from their feet? Maybe!!!

This twin stuff is rough! Never did I think it would be so much different from my singletons! Being older probably isn't helping either!

Baby A is head down. He seems to me very far down, which is fine now, but I wonder how in heck that will feel later on lol

It is a lot different isn't it? I don't remember being so worried all the time, so focused on every feeling, every move. And yep being older doesn't help either. My girls are getting ready to turn 11 and 14 so I was much younger...never thought I would be having babies in my 30's.

Another thing I've noticed with the contractions is that whenever I get them the pressure makes me feel like I have to pee (even if it's a drop!). So that may be part of the pressure feeling too, if you're getting the contractions when you stand up, I always get them when I get up to go to the bathroom...Glad you got checked out and that your cervix looked good! My OB now does the FFN every two weeks with cervical checks as some kind of reassurance that we're clear...

    Dianna,

I can relate to having older children! I have a 12 YR DS, a 20 YR DSS and a 4 YR DS! And now the twins! I was 25 when my 25 yr old was born! DH was 20 when his DS was born! 4 yr DS is ours together and now I'll be 38 when the twins are born! Even when I was pg with 4 yr DS everything seemed so much different than with my 12 YR DS!

    Stinks getting old!!!

    What is an FFN?

Next month after my appointment on the 19, I then will be going in every two weeks and will do some sort of cervical check. Wish I could have been going in every two weeks from the start. Maybe I wouldn't be so stressed lol
